Aesthetics of Frame Construction - Focusing on the Ito Takashi's "Spacy" -

Spacy(1981), the representative work of Ito Takashi, is a particularly visual one that purely consists of spacial movements. The frame of Spacy resembles that of painting or photography. Although the movie inherited and introduced one-point perspective into lens, Spacy overcomes the limit of its framed and disconnected space, and shows the possibility of space that is open and can be expanded continuously. Compared to the frame of photograph or painting that concentrates space inwards, the frame structure, added to physical movement, plays to expand our own consciousness into open space. Ito makes the memory of real space settle on photography as a space image through the mechanism of hand-made filming, structuralizing images in physical space and time. In the medium of film, the consciousness of the artist has a direct equivalent relationship with the film. Through such a way of frame by frame and repetitive editing by reproduction, Ito shows a methodology that makes mundane spacial-temporal images extraordinary.
