There are many methods for estimating the phonetic value of ‘’, but all of them have some weak points. So an endless discussion continues till today. For the sake of settling this situation, it needs to make various use but different use of each methods owing to its characteristics. The main point in the phonetic value of ‘’ lies in the place of tongue. Many different views have been proposed, for example, from back vowel to central vowel in the backness of tongue and from low vowel to mid-high vowel in the height of tongue. In this period, we have to make time to think if it is right to take pinpoint approach. All the vowels have broad range in vowel chart and it may be impossible to specify the missing vowel. It need some flexible attitude. In addition, we must distinguish the phonetic value part and contrast relation part. These two parts have something to do but not coincide each other.

이 글은 ‘’의 음가 추정에 활용되는 방법론에 초점을 맞추어 ‘’의 음가론이 어떻게 전개되었는지 살핀다. ‘’의 음가 추정에 활용된 방법은 매우 다양하지만 각각이 한계점을 지닌다. 그래서 ‘’의 음가론은 여전히 혼돈의 상태에서 벗어나지 못하고 있다. 이를 해결하기 위해서는 개별 방법론의 특징을 고려하여 그 활용을 달리할 필요가 있다. ‘’의 음가를 추정하기 위한 직접적인 방법과 추정된 음가의 타당성을 간접적으로 뒷받침하는 방법을 구분하면서 최대한 다양한 방법들을 활용해야 할 것이다. ‘’의 음가론에서 핵심 쟁점은 혀의 위치에 있다. 혀의 전후 위치에 있어서는 후설에서 중설, 혀의 높낮이에 있어서는 중간 부근에서 맨 아래에 걸쳐 다양한 음가들이 제안되었다. 그런데 ‘’의 음가를 모음도 상의 어느 한 지점에 정확히 위치시키려는 시도가 최선의 방법인지는 의문의 여지가 있다. 조음 영역이 넓은 모음의 특성을 고려하면 ‘’의 음역을 보다 융통성 있게 한정하는 것이 더 현실적이다. 또한 ‘’의 음가론과 대립 관계의 차이점도 명확히 인식해야 할 것이다.
