This study aims to interpret the morphological characteristics and the formation of the gridiron urban form in Downtown Denver, USA. The results are as follows. The first, the gridiron urban form in Downtown Denver is composed of three kinds of urban pattern(the cardinal directions grid, the diagonal directions grid, checkerboard grid) which is different from each other in time of formation. The second, each urban form were made by the different logic in urban morphological process such as the natural environment, the developer’s interest and Public Land Survey System(Jefferson Grid). The third, the plot module(25×125ft) was generally applied in the plot system of the urban block. The plot system had a stronger tendency to keep the width than the depth. In conclusion, coexisting together of the different gridiron urban patterns in Downtown Denver result from adopting of the different logics according to morphological process. The natural environment and developer’s interests were the factors making the urban form in the pioneer period, and then the main factor was changed to Jefferson Grid. These factors have made the characteristics of urban form in Downtown Denver. This study will contribute to broadening the scope of the urban form research on USA in South Korea.

본 연구는 미국 덴버의 도심지역을 대상으로 격자형 도시형태의 구성방식과 특징을 도시블록의 형태적 특징과 필지구성 체계에 기초하여 분석하는데 목적이 있다. 연구는 덴버 도심부 시기별 현황지도와 토지구획도면(Subdivisions Map), GIS map 등을 분석과 문헌조사 및 현장조사를 병행하여 진행되었다. 연구결과 첫째, 형성과정에 나타난 덴버 도심의 격자형 도시형태는 세 가지의 유형(대각선격자, 남북장방형격자, 정방형 격자)으로 명확하게 구분된다. 각각의 도시형태는 도로체계, 블록, 필지 구성방식에서 차이가 확인되었다. 둘째, 지역차원의 도시형태형성논리가 국가차원의 거대한 논리로 대치되어 현재의 덴버 도시형태를 형성한 것이다. 셋째, 초기 도시형태와 이후 도시형태의 경계부에서 발생하는 이질적인 형태의 블록과 필지, 그리고 대각선방향격자형태 안에 존재하는 남북방향의 토지구획경계 등은 두 도시형태간의 간섭과 충돌의 결과물이다. 넷째, 덴버 도시형태를 구성하는 블록내 필지체계는 필지의 기본모듈을 적용하여 만들어졌다. 결론적으로 덴버 다운타운에 형태적으로 구별되는 격자의 공존은 시기에 따라 자연환경, 개발논리, 제도적 요인 등으로 대표되는 형성논리의 차이에서 비롯된 것임을 확인할 수 있었다. 자연환경 및 개발논리가 초기 도시형성의 기본인자였으나 이후 제퍼슨그리드에 의해 도시형태가 결정되어왔다. 이와 같은 점은 덴버가 타 도시와 다른 형태의 도시공간 특성을 갖는 배경이 된다.
