The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the 'Focus on the Plot Music Therapy Program' on improving the speaking behavior of children with selective mutism. The study subject was a 5th grade elementary school boy who had been diagnosed with adjustment disorder due to selective mutism, and who had been assigned to a special class at ‘S’elementary school in Seoul, Korea. The study was a single subject case study. The present study was composed of a modified reversal design ABABA. The examination was conducted 27 times over a 7-week period and the final Stage A was conducted to verify the follow up. Three Language Arts sessions(A) were performed 6, 5, and 4times each, excluding any of the music therapy elements. The two ‘Focus on the Plot Music Therapy Program’sessions(B) were performed 6 times each while the language arts class was in session. Resultantly, the subject spoke 1(language arts class 1), 4.8(music therapy intervention 1), 0.8(language arts class 2), 10.8(music therapy intervention2), 2.2(language arts class 3) times on average during the ABABA study. The alternate sessions clearly showed the subject to be more interactive during the music therapy sessions. The follow-up session showed that the subject attempted to speak almost twice as many times as in the first session.

이 연구는 사건구성 음악치료 프로그램이 선택적 함묵증 아동의 말하기 행동 향상에 미치 는 영향에 대해 알아보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 연구대상은 서울소재 S초등학교에 선택적 함묵증으로 인해 적응장애로 진단받고 특수학급에 입급 되어있는 5학년 남자아동이며 단일 대상 사례연구로 진행되었다. 연구는 변형된 ABABA형식으로 구성하여 총 7주, 27회기에 걸쳐 실시되었으며 마지막 A단계는 연구의 유지(follow up)를 알아보기 위한 목적으로 진 행하였다. 연구결과, ABABA의 진행에서 나타난 말하기 행동의 평균값은 각각 1번(국어수 업1), 4.8번(음악치료중재1), 0.8번(국어수업2), 10.8번(음악치료중재2), 2.2번(국어수업3-유지 확인단계)이다. 번갈아 진행된 국어수업과 음악치료중재에서 국어수업에서는 현저히 낮은 말하기 행동을 보인 아동이 음악치료중재 기간 동안의 말하기 행동에서는 뚜렷한 향상이 관찰되었다. 연구의 유지를 알아보기 위한 목적으로 진행한 마지막 국어수업단계에서는 처 음 진행된 국어수업보다 말하기 행동에서 2배 이상 증가된 결과가 나타났다.
