This paper aimed to present the opportunity to develop the women's apparel design which have high product values and is differentiated in the global market by proposing the women's design using traditional triangle patchwork pattern. These designs have both traditional beauty and elegance of Korea as well as modern fashion look. In accordance with the analysis results on the formative features of patchworks of Korea, the planes comprised rectangular, radial, Yeouijumun, and free shape. It indicated that the patterns were applied. For color arrangement, the complementary colors of blue and red series in five colors were used and the soft color arrangement was also adopted. For selecting the patterns to develop the pattern design, this paper selected the triangle patchwork composition which looked the most elegant and vital in plane composition among the formative features and made the quilt using blue, red and white colors in five colors which were the most frequently adopted. The patterns were repeatedly arranged using Adobe Photoshop CS5 and finally 8 flat designs accomplished. The conclusion from designs are, First, the triangle patch design which was newly created in this paper was applied to modern clothing and so the unique image was created. Next, the traditional Korean clothing element was partially applied to the flat design of the modern women's apparel and the design emphasizing the elegance and activity rather than the existing images of traditional clothing was created. The design harmonized with the patchwork patterns indicated the highly added values. Finally, this study proved that the traditional patchwork could be proposed in a variety of designs in apparel by modernizing the triangle designs, renovating radial, Yeouiju and free shapes and applying them to the modern apparel.

본 연구는 우리나라의 전통미와 조형적 특성을 겸비한 조각보에 나타난 미적요소를 활용하여 여성복 디자인을 제시하고자 세계시장에서 차별화 되고 상품가치가 높은 여성복 디자인 개발의 계기를 제시하고자 하였다. 우리나라 조각보의 조형적 특성을 살펴 본 결과 면구성에서는 삼각형, 사각형, 방사형, 여의주문형, 자유형 등으로 구성되어 문양이 나타난 것으로 분석되었다. 또한 색채 배합에서는 오방색 중에서도 청색과 적색계열을 강한대비를 사용하여 제작하였으며 차분한 백색을 함께 사용하였던 것을 알 수 있었다. 이에 본 연구자는 문양 디자인 개발을 위한 문양선정에서 조형적 특성 중 면구성 배합 중 가장 세련되고 생기 있는 배열을 보여준 삼각형 조각보 구성을 선정하고, 색상배합에서 가장 많이 쓰인 오방색 중 청색, 적색, 백색을 사용하여 조각보를 제작하여 Adobe Photoshop CS5을 통해 문양을 반복, 패턴을 제작하고 도식화를 8점 디자인하였다. 제시된 도식화를 통하여 얻은 결론은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 현대 의상에 접목된 세모꼴의 조각보 디자인을 문양으로 표현함으로 독창적인 이미지를 표출시킬 수 있었다. 둘째, 현대 여성복 도식화 디자인에 전통 한복요소를 디테일로 일부 적용하여 전통복식의 이미지보다는 세련되며 활동성을 겸비한 디자인으로 재구성 되었으며 조각보 문양과 함께 어우러져 전통요소의 새로운 가치를 발견 할 수 있었다. 셋째, 세모꼴 조각보 문양을 통해 방사형, 여의주문형, 자유형 구성 등으로 전개하여 현대 복식에 적용시킨다면 한국적인 전통미가 강한 조각보의 활용이 현대복식에서도 적용 가능하리라고 사료한다.
