Youth literature specifically forms the nature of the existence of youth and gives the opportunities for the self-discovery, raising various issues related to the present. In addition, youth literature makes them pursue the genuine life in the future, coping with the present life. It also satisfies the youth’s needs, promoting their understanding about themselves, others and the world. Because of these reasons, youth can strive to prepare their future life and understand the present by the reading of youth literature. Furthermore, they can discover their true self with role models met in literature.

청소년 문학은 청소년들의 현재 삶에 부합하는 다양한 이슈들을 형상화하여 청소년의 존재성과 삶을 구체적으로 형상화할 뿐만 아니라 청소년들의 정체성이 어떠해야 하는가에 대한 성찰을 제공한다. 아울러 성장하는 존재로서 청소년들이 현재의 삶을 잘 대처하여 미래의 삶을 추구할 수 있게 한다. 이러한 의의를 갖는 청소년 문학은 자기 자신, 타자, 세계 등에 대한 이해를 증진시켜 줌으로써 청소년들의 욕구들을 충족시켜 준다. 이 때문에 청소년들은 청소년 문학 독서를 통해 현실에 대한 이해와 미래의 삶에 대한 준비를 하고 나아가 자아의 정체성 탐구를 위한 역할 모델들을 발견할 수 있게 되는 것이다.
