The purpose of this study is to contribute to improvement of the general education (GE) at the korean universities through discussion about what is considered in reforming the current curricula of GE. This study’s thesis is that the process should be centered and the campus culture should be considered for substantial and sustainable reform. In this article literatures and examples supporting this point of view on the GE change are examined and discussed the implications of the successful reform samples at american institutions. It was followed by reviewing the principles and variables of the GE reform. It is said that the two main principles are ‘defining of the reform process prior to discussing the contents of the GE curricula’ and ‘reforming through deep envisioning and gradual changing the cultures of each campus’ affecting on the change process. For the successful GE reform should be deliberated a number of variables such as shared leadership, faculty engagement, and mutual communication. As the successful cases, North Carolina Greensboro campus and Alverno College are exemplified. In the former case, the GE curriculum has been reformed for seven years and reflected the principles like process and culture based reform and the variables including distributed leadership, members engagement, and bidirectional communication. In the later case, the GE reform system has continued over thirty years and can be characterized by the role of the campus cultures, identity and mission of faculty, consistent faculty engagement, verifiable and effective student learning, continuos improvement and so on. In addition, the evidence of the successful GE reform efforts are illustrated by instances at American University, Franklin Pierce College, Cascadia Community College, and Hamline University. The successful cases of GE curricula reform at american colleges and universities can provide the korean higher education institutions making the GE reform endeavor with some implications. It often includes the fact that the process and cultures are crucial in trying to change institutional systems and the reform efforts can be strongly influenced by the variables like leadership, engagement, communication etc. In order to develop GE reform models appropriate each collegiate situation, it is needed to conduct further research associated with Intercultural Communication or the theory of change.

이 논문은 대학 교양교육 개선이 구조나 내용 중심으로 시도되는 경우에 본질적이고 지속 가능한 개혁으로 이어지기 어렵다는 문제의식에서 출발한다. 교양 교과과정 개편에서 분과학문을 기반으로 하는 영역이나 범주 등 구조를 바꾸거나 영역별 교과목의 명칭이나 내용을 바꾸는 결과 중심의 개편 시도로 인해 원하는 개선을 기대할 수가 없는 것이다. 연구목적은 국내 대학의 교양교육 개혁에서 고려해야할 사항을 논의함으로써, 한국 대학의 교양 교과과정 모델 개발과 교양교육의 개선에 기여하는 것이다. 여기서는 교양교육의 본질적이고 지속 가능한 개선을 위해서는 결과 중심 개혁보다는 과정 중심 개혁이 필요하고, 각 대학의 문화적 요소를 개혁 과정에서 고려해야 한다는 입장을 견지한다. 이러한 주장을 뒷받침해주는 문헌들과 사례들을 비교 고찰하여 새로운 개혁 모델을 개발하는 데 필요한 시사점을 살펴보는 방식으로 논지를 전개하였다. 이를 위해 교과과정 개혁의 원리와 변인에 대해서 정리한 후 미국의 중장기 교양교육 개혁 사례를 비교 고찰하여 성공적인 개혁 사례의 시사점을 논의하였다. 교양교육 개혁의 주요 원리는 ‘교과과정 내용 논의 이전에 개혁 과정을 정의하기’와 ‘과정 중심 개혁과 대학 문화 변형을 통해 본질적이고 지속 가능한 교양교육 개혁하기’ 등이다. 성공적인 교양교육 개혁을 위해서는 일곱 개의 변인을 고려할 수 있는데, 여기서는 그 중에서 분산 리더십, 구성원 참여, 양방향 소통 등을 중심으로 알아보았다. 이어서 미국에서 성공적인 사례로 언급되는 North Carolina 대학교 Greensboro 캠퍼스의 7년에 걸친 개혁 과정을 알아보았다. 이 대학은 연구 중심 대학, 17,000명 정도의 학생 규모, 조화를 중시하는 대학문화의 특성을 가지고 있다. 장기 개혁의 사례로 30년 이상 지속되고 있는 교양교육 개혁의 시스템을 구축한 Alverno College의 개혁 과정을 살펴보았으며, 주요 특징은 본질적이고 지속 가능한 교양교육 개혁에서 문화의 역할, 교수진의 정체성과 사명, 교수진의 꾸준한 참여, 입증 가능하게 효과적인 학생 학습, 지속적인 개선 등이다. 또한, 참여와 소통을 중시한 개선의 사례를 대학 규모별로 살펴보았다. 마지막으로, 이러한 사례의 성공 요인과 한국의 중장기 교양교육 개선에 주는 시사점을 정리해 보았다. 여기서 살펴본 내용은 한국의 대학별 교과과정 개혁 모델을 구상하는 데 이론적 토대를 제공할 수 있을 것이다.
