This study examined the features of structural design expressed in the knitwear of Sandra Backlund, who is developing her own unique product with a creative experimenting spirit in modern knit fashion. Her pieces have an ergonomic, experimental and creative sculptural element. This research intends to reestablish the value of the structural design features that can be found in modern fashion and provide a basis for application to creative design development and production in the future. The concept and features of structural design and Sandra Backlund's world were examined through related literature and preceding studies, and her collections from 2004 S/S to 2013 S/S were analyzed. Her structural design expressions could be categorized into repeated geometric forms, deconstruction of reproduction of the human body through clothing structure, and exaggeration through organic combination and construction of three-dimensional surfaces. Firstly, three-dimensional formativeness was expressed by formation and repeat of geometric forms. Secondly, individuality expressed grotesque images as distortion of the body and dismantlement of fabric. Thirdly, organic formativeness made exaggerated extensity through flexible curves and simple forms of an indeterminate form. Fourthly, three-dimensional construction development was shown through three-dimensional surfaces of handcrafted hand-knitting. Structural design expressions, which show distorted forms caused by reinterpretation of the human body's organic formation, have appeared since the 20th century, and has the potential for creation of new designs.

본 연구는 현대 패션에서 창조적 실험정신으로 자신만의 독특한 작품을 전개하고 있는 산드라 백룬드 (Sandra Backlund)의 니트웨어 작품에 나타난 구조적 디자인의 특성을 고찰하였다. 신체를 우선시하며 실 험적이고 독창적인 조형세계를 표방하는 산드라 백룬드의 컬렉션에 나타난 구조적 디자인의 특성을 통해 현대 패션에 전개되고 있는 구조적 디자인의 가치를 재정립하고, 향후 창작 디자인 전개와 연출에 활용하 기 위한 기초자료를 마련하는 데 목적을 두었다. 연구방법은 관련 문헌과 선행연구, 인터넷 자료를 통해 구조적 디자인의 개념과 특성을 고찰하였고, 산드라 백룬드의 2004년 F/W부터 2013년 S/S까지의 컬렉션 을 중심으로 나타난 구조적 디자인의 특성을 분석하였다. 연구결과 산드라 백룬드의 작품에 나타난 구조적 디자인의 특성은 ‘기하학적 형태의 반복’, 의복구조에 따른 신체 재현적 특성의 해체’, ‘유기적 결합을 통한 과장’, ‘입체적 표면구조’로 나타났다. 첫째, ‘기하학적 형태의 반복’은 기하학적 도형의 구성과 반복으로 입 체적 조형성을 표현하였다. 둘째, ‘복식 구조에 따른 신체 재현적 특성의 해체’는 신체의 왜곡과 소재의 해 체로서 그로테스크한 이미지를 나타내었다. 셋째, ‘유기적 결합을 통한 과장’은 부정형 단위 요소의 단순한 형태와 유연한 곡선으로 과장된 공간성을 부여하였다. 넷째, ‘입체적 표면구조’는 수공예 니트의 조직 개발 을 통해 소재의 볼륨감과 입체감을 나타내었다. 신체의 유기적인 조직이 재해석되어 왜곡된 형태로 된 구 조적 디자인의 표현들은 20세기 이후 지속적으로 나타나는 양상이며, 동시에 새로운 디자인을 시도할 수 있는 가능성을 가지고 있다.
