Poetic “Re-writing” in the Modern French Poetry:the concept of “Palimpsest” Min-Seok KWAK (Yonsei University) A palimpsest is a manuscript page from a scroll or a book from which the text has been scraped or washed off to be reused. The word “palimpsest” is derived from Latin ‘palimpsēstus’ and from Ancient Greek ‘palímpsestos’, (scratched or scraped again). In Ancient times, literary works were written on wax-coated tablets that could be smoothed and reused. The term has come to be used in similar context in a variety of disciplines and notably in literature. Parody is a rhetorical intention that imitates the style of another work. This study aims to denote the elements of parody in modern french poems, and especially in Rimbaud’s poem: “Vénus andyomène.” Venus Anadyomene is generally accepted as one of the most famous iconic representations of Aphrodite. Rimbaud recreates the Parnassian poetry using derision and sarcasm and replaces the initial beautiful rhythm in order to parody the work. Rimbaud, in his poem, used traditional poetic structure to engage in a fierce caricature of Venus rising. which resulted in a portrait with heavily derogatory vocabularies.
