The illustration of the picture book is referred to the language of infant age where language development and letter recognition is weak. This study carried a test on 6 infants in order to know how infants understand the meaning of Chimpanzee’s faces in Anthony Browne’s picture book, How Do You Feel. The test showed the pictures of joy, sadness, surprise, and anger to the infants each in color and black-and-white, and analyzed the understanding level of the infants. For the result, on the same faces, color pictures were the better than black-and white ones in understanding level. On the faces whose shapes are obscure, the understanding level seemed to be low in color and blank-and-white as well. But among them, the understanding level of black-and-white ones was significantly low. This implies that accurate picture shape and use of color influences infants’ emotional expression as infants positively develop emotion through proper indirect experiences.

언어 발달이 미숙하고 글자도 익히지 못하는 유아기의 언어라고 일컬어지는 것이 그림책에 나타나는 일러스트레이션이다. 본 연구에서는 앤서니 브라운의 그림책 중, “기분을 말해봐”에 표현된 침팬지 얼굴 표정의 의미를 유아가 어떻게 이해하는지를 알아보기 위하여 6명의 유아를 대상으로 테스트를 실시하였다. “기분을 말해봐”그림책 내용 중에서 기쁨, 슬픔, 놀람, 분노에 해당하는 그림을 추출하여 칼라와 흑백으로 각각 제시했을 때의 유아의 이해도를 분석하였다. 분석결과, 동일한 표정의 그림을 보였을 경우, 흑백 그림보다 칼라의 그림에서 이해도가 높았다. 형태가 모호한 그림을 보였을 경우, 칼라와 흑백 모두에서 이해도가 떨어지는 경향을 보였으나 흑백 그림에서 이해도가 현저히 떨어지는 경향을 보였다. 이는 유아가 올바른 간접 경험을 통해 긍정적 정서발달을 하는데 있어서 정확한 그림형태 표시와 상황에 적합한 칼라표시가 유아의 감정표현에 영향을 끼치고 있음을 의미한다고 볼 수 있다.
