There are various trials for figuring-out the modernity of Korean modern literature. Recently, one of the trials, some studies that research a private field of modern literature increase. The private field of modern Korean literature is a point of modernity and it intend figuring out a problem of self-decision in modern ages. ‘girl-student' is a special representation in early modern ages, it represent most paradoxical problems which modernity include. Especially, 'girl-student' as representation combine with discussion of 'free love', it vividly expose double-faced and confused consciousness of Chosun in 1920'. The 'girl-student' as a representation of Chosun in 1920' reveals similarity and divergence with Japan in Mage. If a 'girl-student' in Mage reveals a chaos of Japan society in early modern ages, a 'girl-student' of Chosun in 1920' bear resemblance. A divergency between two representations is identity of nation and consciousness of history in Korean society. Between rejection to foreign ideas and modernity, 'girl-student' changed through a direction of progress in modernity of Chosun. Studies in directions of modernity in Korea which were formed of modernity, similarity and divergence between Korea and Japan are accomplished through various problems. Consequently. 'girl-student' as representation is formed of a balance in various factors like a diagram.

한국 근대문학의 근대성을 규명하기 위한 작업들은 다양한 시도들을 통하여 전개되었다. 최근 그러한 작업의 일환으로 근대문학의 사적영역을 탐색하는 연구들이 증가하고 있다. 근대문학의 사적 영역은 근대성의 중심적인 부분으로서 자기결정성의 문제를 규명하고자 하는 작업이다. ‘여학생’은 근대초기 가장 특징적인 표상으로서 근대성의 문제가 내포하고 있는 모순적인 양상을 드러내고 있다. 특히 표상으로서의 ‘여학생’은 ‘자유연애담론’과 결합하면서 1920년대 조선사회에 내재해있던 양면성과 착종된 의식의 갈등 양상을 극명하게 드러내고 있다. 1920년대 조선사회의 표상으로서의 ‘여학생’은 그대로 메이지 시기 일본사회의 ‘여학생’의 모습과 유사하면서도 상이한 양상을 드러낸다. 메이지 시기 ‘여학생’이 근대 도입기 일본사회의 혼돈을 드러내고 있었다면 1920년대 조선사회의 ‘여학생’도 유사한 양상을 드러낸다. 두 가지 표상 사이의 차이점 또한 드러나는데 그것은 한국 사회가 안고 있던 민족적 정체성의 문제와 역사의식이었다. 외래 사상에 대한 거부감과 근대성 사이에서 주체로서의 ‘여학생’은 조선사회의 근대성이 진행해 나가는 방향을 따라 변화해 간다. 근대성의 문제, 그리고 한일간의 유사성과 차이의 문제 등을 통하여 한국문학의 근대성이 형성되어 나가는 방향을 규명하는 작업은 따라서 다양한 문제의식들을 통하여 완성될 수 있을 것이다. 표상으로서의 ‘여학생’의 문제는 따라서 하나의 다이어그램처럼 다양한 요소들의 균형을 통하여 완성되는 것이다.
