Baek Yongseonng translated several Buddhist sutras, including Hua-yen Sutra, into Korean. The motivation of his translation might be surmised as follows: his deep religious belief in Buddhism and sense of crisis due to the flood of other religions; useless of the Buddhist Sutras written Classical Chinese; emerge of new generation who read and write in Hangeul; national sentiment; and devotion to propagate Buddhism. The translation and publication of Joseongeul Hwaum-gyeong left footmark in the history of Korean Buddhist Sutras. It is the first translation of Hua-yen Sutra. He translated the prose and original odes in the sutra but left out the repeated odes in order to avoid redundant and tedious reading. Most proper nouns and even some general nouns are elucidated. New Buddhist terminologies are introduced. The first draft of the translation was completed in two years. Several months later the entire translation was published in twelve volumes after careful proofreading. They were published by three different publishers, including one Christian publishing company, for the swift publication. Several years later the second translation was made in order to make up the mistakes on the first translation. The second translation was in huge volume with fourteen thousand words, but was not published. Joseongeul Hwaeomgyeong, the first translation of Hua-yen Sutra into Korean, became an initial explosive for translation of Buddhist sutras into Korean, and big contribution for the Hua-yen study in Korea.

백용성스님이 『화엄경』 뿐만 아니라 여러 경전들을 번역하게 된 배경에는 신앙적인 신심과 타종교의 범람에 대한 위기감, 시대변화에 따른 한문경전의 무용론, 한글세대의 확산, 민족적인 감정, 포교에 대한 원력 등 여러 가지가 복합되었다고 보여 진다. 『조선글 화엄경』의 번역과 출판은 한국불교사에서 큰 변화이며, 한국불교 역경사에서 큰 족적을 남겼다고 보여 진다. 특히 『화엄경』의 한글번역은 최초의 불사로서 높이 평가하지 않을 수 없다. 그는 80권본 『화엄경』을 번역하면서 산문과 고기송은 번역하고 중송은 생략하여 독자들로 하여금 반복되고 지루함을 피하기 위해 노력하였다. 번역을 하면서 고유명사나 보통명사도 한글로 풀이하여 번역하였으며, 불교용어의 변화도 시도 하였다. 특히 경전상에 나오는 불교 고유명사를 뜻으로 풀이한다는 것은 어려운 일임에도 불구하고 이를 시도하였다. 1차 번역본인 『조선글 화엄경』은 2년 이내에 번역을 완료하였으며, 교정도 세심하게 2차에 걸쳐서 보았다. 출판도 수 개월 내에 12권을 모두 출간하였다. 그러기 위해서 출판사를 3곳에 분산하였으며, 기독교출판사임에도 불구하고 출판을 의뢰하여 무난히 단기간에 할 수 있었다. 또한 몇 년 뒤에 2차로 번역을 시도하여 『譯漢鮮 大方廣佛華嚴經』을 재번역하였다. 1차의 문제점에 대한 보완과 한문원전은 대조하여 정리하였다. 이는 방대한 분량으로 약 7,000매 정도나 된다. 그러나 애석하게도 출판하지는 못하고 말았다. 『조선글 화엄경』의 의의는 한글 최초의 『화엄경』이라는 점과 알기 쉬운 우리말 『화엄경』을 출판하여 기폭제 역할을 함으로써 오늘날 한국불교에서 『화엄경』과 화엄학 연구에 크게 기여한 것으로 평가하지 않을 수 없다.
