This research aims to explore the relations of gender and urban space by looking at the changing nature of an adult entertainment industry and its expansion in contemporary global cities. In recent years, the importance of spacial justice between men and women is wildly recognized by many of the global cities. However, paradoxically, the economic size of an adult entertainment industry also keeps growing and many businesses, including bars, hotels, and night clubs are intensively located at the city centers, intensively. Knowing an urban space is a ‘social space’, it is important to examine what values or ways of thinking determine the formation of urban space, especially the construction of an ‘exceptional’ urban space for an adult entertainment industry at the city centers. The space of urban adult entertainment industry is where men purchase a sexual service from women. This implies that capitalist notion as well as male-dominant sexual value are still prevalence in contemporary cities and provide an ideological basis for the production and reproduction of such ‘exceptional’ urban space. In the regard, through the examination of an adult entertainment industry and its spacial features, this research points out the geographical, social, political and economic conditions which are important to the production and reproduction of the sex and gender hierarchy, as well as the relations of gender and urban space. Sangnamdong in the city of Changwon is specifically looked into as a major research site that shows the mainstreaming of an adult entertainment industry at the city center.

본 연구는 창원시 상남동을 중심으로 최근 우리나라 뿐 아니라 서구 국가의 도시 중심부에서 변형⋅재생산되고 있는 성인 엔터테인먼트 공간 형성의 배경과 특징을 파악하고, 그러한 공간의 ‘예외성’에 대해 논의해보고자 한다. 공적인 도시 공간에서 사적인 것으로 간주되는 성이 거래된 역사는 아주 오래되었지만, 오늘날 글로벌 도시 간 공적 공간의 공공성과 생태성, 더욱이 ‘여성 친화성’이 경쟁적으로 강조되는 시점에 도심 성인 엔터테인먼트 공간의 주류화 현상이 나타나고 있다는 점은 역설적이다. 도시 공간이 곧 ‘사회적 공간’이라는 맥락에서 볼 때, 도심 성인 엔터테인먼트 공간의 변형과 확산을 이해하기 위해서는 오늘날 우리 사회의 도심 공간 형성을 지배하는 가치나 논리체계가 무엇인지 파악할 필요가 있다. 도심 성인 엔터테인먼트 공간이 여성의 (유사) 성 상품이나 서비스를 남성이 다양한 방식으로 구매하는 공간이라는 점에서, 그 공간은 우리사회의 지배적인 자본축적의 논리와 성적 가치에 의해 생산⋅재생산 된다고 볼 수 있다. 이런 점에서, 본 연구는 자본주의 도시의 젠더와 공간 간의 관계성에 주목하며, 성인 엔터테인먼트 산업의 공간 지형을 통해 우리나라의 성⋅젠더 질서가 생산되는 지리적, 사회적, 정치적, 경제적인 조건들을 파악해보고자 한다.
