This study aims to examine the causal association between domestic socio-economic indicators and people’s perceptions of territorial disputes. This research concludes that the hypotheses linking domestic socio-economic indices to public opinion towards territorial disputes are not be supported for the obvious lack of causal association between the two issue domains. This paper makes two arguments. First, the conventional cyclical theorem (i.e., status quo-->provocation--> rise of tension--> relaxation) needs to be revised to simultaneous and interactive (i.e., action {tension/status quo/reconciliation}-->reaction {tension/status quo/reconciliation}) model. Second, the rising importance of domestic and international opinions of the disputes deserves careful attention for it serves as mediating variable determining the policy direction among the strategies of tension, status quo and reconciliation.

본 연구는 일본 국내 사회경제지표가 영유권분쟁 관련 인식에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 두 차례에 걸친 여론조사와 정책엘리트 면담, 주요 일간지와 타여론 조사들과의 비교 등을 통한 분석 결과 일본 국내의 사회경제지수와 영유권 분쟁 사이의 인과 관계가 성립되지 않음을 알 수 있었다. 영유권 분쟁이라는 국익 그리고 정체성 관련 현안은 국내 사회경제지수보다는 국가간 상호작용의 설명틀이 더 유용한 것으로 판단된다. 따라서 기존의 현상유지－>도발적 강경노선－>긴장－>긴장완화의 단면적이고 순차적 사이클보다는 작용 {긴장／현상유지／화해} ->반작용 {긴장／현상유지／화해}의 입체적이고 동시적인 상호작용의 설명이 더 유효하며 이 과정에서의 주요매개변수가 여론(또는 인식)이라고 분석한다. 동아시아에서의 영유권분쟁은 이미 법적, 경제적, 안보 전략적 차원을 벗어나 각국에 유리한 국내, 국제적 여론형성 전략으로 중심이동을 하고 있기에 영유권 분쟁관련 국내외 여론의 추이를 예의주시할 필요성이 증가하고 있다.
