The purpose of this study was to carry out the relation of a type of traumatic events and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder(PTSD) symptoms of police officers : Focusing on the moderating effects of coping style. The Questionnaires contained a series of assessing their level of traumatic events, impact of events and coping style. The Experiences of traumatic events Scale, Impact of Event Scale-Revised(IES-R), and The Brief COPE were administered to 450 police officers working in Kyoungki. To test the hypothetical model, SPSS 18.0 statistical analyses are used. The results were followed. (1) The results indicated that the direct traumatic events and the indirect traumatic events were predictive of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder(PTSD) symptoms. In comparison of the differences in PTSD symptoms according to a type of traumatic events showed that the effect of the indirect traumatic events on PTSD symptoms was greater than the direct traumatic events. (2) The traumatic events didn't decrease PTSD symptoms through interacting with stress coping style. Results have shown that dysfunctional stress coping style could influence PTSD symptoms through main effects. Finally, implication and limitation of this study were discussed.

본 연구에서는 국내 경찰공무원을 대상으로 외상 사건의 유형과 PTSD 증상간의 관계를 파악하고, 외상 사건에 따른 PTSD 증상에서 대처양식이 가지는 조절효과를 알아보고자 하였다. 450명의 현직 경찰공무원을 대상으로 외상 사건과 PTSD 증상 및 대처양식을 측정하기 위해 외상성 사건 경험 척도, 사건충격척도 개정판(IES-R), 스트레스 대처양식 척도를 사용하여 자료를 수집하였다. 이 가운데 결측치가 포함된 24명의 자료를 제외한 426부의 자료가 최종 분석에 사용되었으며 외상 사건의 유형과 PTSD 증상의 관계를 살펴보기 위해 상관분석과, 중다회귀분석을, 대처양식의 조절효과를 조사하기 위해 위계적 회귀분석을 실시하였다. 본 연구의 결과 첫째, 직접 외상 사건과 간접 외상 사건은 PTSD 증상에 유의한 영항을 주었다. 또한 직접 외상 사건보다 간접 외상 사건이 PTSD 증상에 더 큰 영향을 주었다. 둘째, 외상 사건 정도에 따른 PTSD 증상에서 문제중심적, 정서중심적, 역기능적 대처양식의 조절효과는 모두 유의하지 않았다. 다만, 역기능적 대처를 많이 사용할수록 PTSD 증상에 더 큰 영향을 주는 주효과만이 유의하였다. 이러한 결과는 경찰공무원의 외상 사건 유형의 정도에 따라 PTSD 증상에 미치는 영향이 차이에 주목하였으며 특히, 경찰공무원의 PTSD 증상 연구에 있어서 간접 외상 사건 경험의 중요성을 새롭게 인식하였다. 또한, PTSD 증상의 심리사회적 모형인 스트레스 과정 모델을 토대로 한 경찰공무원의 외상 사건 경험과 대처양식 간의 관계 모형을 통해 대처양식의 조절효과를 분석함으로써 국내 경찰 공무원의 정신 건강에 대한 개입 방향에 있어 본 연구의 결과 및 특성을 바탕으로 보다 실제적인 근거에 기반한 예방 및 위기 개입 프로그램에 대한 기초 연구 자료 및 추후 연구 방향에 대한 제안에 중요한 시사점을 준다.
