In this study, a researcher investigated how people represent rejections in Politeness. The object in the study was included as an expression followed by primary to secondary refusal expressions such as proposal, request, recommendation. In order to achieve purposes each other in the language of human behavior, they give and take many strategies. I found two different kinds of results such as an active politeness strategy and a passive politeness strategy among many strategies. Usami(2003) said that according to the politeness theory, Brown & Levinson (1987), in case of a positive face, they used active politeness strategies. On the other hand, in case of negative face, they used passive politeness strategies. In contrast with Usami’s previous study (2003), they showed a use of an opposite Politeness Strategy. In case of scene of rejection, they expressed their thoughts with maintaining their appearances. To examine these results, I collected and analyzed usages from Primary refusal expressions to secondary refusal expressions among 180 Korea dramas and 146 Japanese dramas. The usages connected to the secondary refusal were totally 46. In case of secondary refusal expressions, Korea is nearly twice more than Japan. As a result, there were 12 among 42 secondary refusal expressions such as changes from speaker center to listener center or listener center. Among them, politeness strategies shown the changes were able to confirm nine.

본 조사에서는 공손이 거절표현에 있어서는 어떻게 나타나는지를 고찰하였다. 고찰의 대상은 제안, 부탁, 권유에 대한 거절표현으로서 1차에 이은 2차 거절까지의 담화를 대상으로 하였다. 인간의 언어 행동에 있어서 서로의 목적달성을 위해 헤아릴 수 없는 여러 전략을 주고받는다. 이러한 여러 전략 중에서 적극적 공손 전략과 소극적 공손 전략이 사용되어 지는 경우, 우사미(2003)은 Brown&Levinson(1987)의 공손이론을 빌려 포지티브 페이스(Positive face)인 경우는 적극적 공손 전략을 사용하며 네거티브 페이스(Negative face)에는 소극적 공손 전략이 사용된다고 한다. 선행연구에서 우사미(2003)의 주장 외에 거절장면에 있어서는 상대의 체면을 유지 시키면서 거절자의 뜻을 피력하는 것으로 상반되는 공손 전략(Politeness Strategy)의 사용예가 보였다. 이러한 결과를 검토하기 위해 한국 드라마 180화와 일본 드라마 146화중에서 1차에서 2차 거절까지의 용례를 수집하여 분석하였다. 2차 거절까지 이어지는 용례는 총 46개가 나타났다. 그 중 한국이 일본에 비해 약 2배 많은 2차 거절을 보였다. 46개의 2차 거절표현 중에서 화자중심에서 청자중심으로의 변화, 또는 청자중심에서 화자중심으로의 변화를 보인 것은 12개가 나타났다. 그 중, 공손전략의 변화를 보인 것은 9개 확인 할 수 있었다.
