Aspects on trauma and popular culture in “An Embrace in the Mature Night” written by Ki Won Seo Kim, Won-hee Based on “An Embrace in the Mature Night” written by Ki Won Seo, this study clarifies the will to overcome postwar trauma by analyzing aspects of popular culture through war trauma and body metaphor approach. This fiction clearly demonstrates possibility to overcome war trauma by reenacting not only traumatic bruises and traces of the war but also the images of lives and culture in Korea after war and carnivalesque world. First, it reenacts the sense of freedom that resists to reality through the desertion trauma. Represented by desertion, the resistance of “self” to reality expands anti-war sentiment since witnessing concrete actuality of war. Second, the sense of life faces instinct through survival trauma. Reflected by survive, purification of lost humanity is met with the sense of life pivot on instinct. Third and last, the sense of salvationfor human revival is reemerged through growth trauma. The sense of salvation which is reenacted by growth trauma expands to a sense of salvation for pure love. This study intends to suggest clue for humanistic value that enables us to reflect our current status as adivided country through illuminating how the trauma discloses the sense of instinct and can be overcome in the perspective of popular culture in the fiction.
