‘Careerman’ and ‘Businesswoman’ of Gyeongseong: Reality of mystic love and marriage - Consideration on Work of Bekgu of Yeom Sang Seob Kim, Seong-yeon Bekgu is located at the center of Yeom Sang Seob’s works in 1930’s. Socialist organization appears fragmented and dim, and disappears completely in works after ‘Bekgu’. Along with this, the existence of Bourgeois sympathizer also weakens at “Bekgu”. Youngsik, the reader of the “Capital” and the petit bourgeois was not taken into the sponsor or supporter of socialist organization, but just used as a fraud tour for their fundraising. As well, the sympathizer who weakened at Bekgu never appeared at the works after that. Like this, Bekgu serves as the turning point work of Yeom Sang Seob in creation tendency in 30’s from which he threw away heavy materials and turned to the personal and daily problems. In particular, different from previous works of Yeom Sang Seob which focused on the life of capitalist and their surrounding, ‘Bekgu’ took issue with lives of Jeoseon people and intellectuals who became marginalized and lower class through ‘careerman’ and ‘businesswoman’, the lower middle class of Gyeongseong in 30’s. In addition, by describing the views of marriage and love of these stratum, it devoted to exposing the desires of Joseon salaried employees who wanted to be assigned to ‘petty bourgeois’. This work is the first novel of Yeom Sang Sob that intensively describes the Joseon petty intellectual rather than the capitalist or ‘white collar’, and is important in that it examines the social position and conflict of young Joseon people of the times by putting up the Joseon “businesswoman’ in the front who was not included as ‘petty bourgeois’ different from Japan.
