Lin Yutang was first introduced to South Korea through an article by Ding Laidong published in “Korean Daily” on July 26, 1929. In 1940, the magazine “Three Miles” began to partially serialize the translation of Lin Yutang’s “Moment in Peking” translated by Pu Taiyuan, one member of South Korean association “Nine Members”. It was the first time that Lin Yutang’s works were introduced to South Korea, and the translation of his works into Korean language is more than 80 years since then. Lin Yutang has become a contemporary Chinese literati deeply loved and respected by Korean scholars and the public. Lin Yutang’s works have a wide readership age in South Korea, and have made a great impact on modern South Koreans and Korean literary field, either in thought or in literary creation. Based on systematic sorting of the translated versions of Lin Yutang’s works in Korean, this study analyzes the social background, the translation activities and its main characteristics of each translation phase: The 1940s saw the initial period of Korean translation of Lin Yutang’s works. The 1950s, especially after the end of the Korean War, marked the beginning of a new era of Korean translation of Chinese modern literature, among which, several Lin Yutang’s major works were introduced to South Korea. The 1960s‐80s witnessed the steady increase in the number of translated Lin Yutang’s works in Korean, in particular, the translation of Lin Yutang’s prose works accounted for a large proportion of Korean translation of Chinese prose. The establishment of diplomatic relations between China and South Korea in 1992, contributed much to the emergence of a new period of Korean translation of Chinese literary works, specifically, Korean translation of Lin Yutang’s works entered in full bloom, ranging from almost all his novels to most of his prose works. This paper makes an analysis of the characteristics of Korean translation of Lin Yutang’s works in three aspects: the genre, the works and the translator. With respect to the genre, Korean translation of Lin Yutang’s prose works accounts for a large part, among which, translation work is mainly concentrated on his several prose masterpieces such as The importance of living. Virtually, Korean translation of Lin Yutang’s works serves as a window of Cultural Exchange between China and South Korea. Lin Yutang’s petit bourgeois attitude towards life, the integration of Chinese and Western culture, as well as his sense of humor have been widely recognized and accepted by Korean scholars and the public. Meanwhile, Lin Yutang’s positive affirmations of Korean traditional culture and the spirit of South Korea have contributed a lot to Sino‐Korean cultural exchange and friendship development.

임어당이 최초로 한국에 소개된 것은 1929년 7월 26일『조선일보』에 게재된 정래동의 글 이었다. 임어당의 작품이 한국에 번역 소개된 것은 1940년 “구인회”의 한 사람인 박태원이 임 어당의 소설 Moment in Peking의 일부를 번역하여『삼천리』에 게재된 것으로부터 시작되 었다. 현재 임어당이 한국에 소개된 지 이미 80여년이 지났으며, 임어당도 한국문인과 독자들 이 가장 좋아하고 존경하는 중국 당대문인의 한 사람이 되었다. 임어당의 작품은 한국에서 광 범위한 독자층을 확보하고 있으며, 사상 면에서나 문학 면에서 한국독자들에게 많은 영향을 주었다. 이 논문에서는 임어당 작품이 한국에 번역 소개된 과정을 정리하고 각 시기의 특징을 고찰하고자 한다. 1940년대는 임어당 작품이 한국에 초보적으로 번역소개된 시기로 볼 수 있 다. 1950년대 한국전쟁이 끝난 후, 임어당 작품이한국에 본격적으로 번역 소개되기 시작하였 다. 이 시기에 임어당의 몇몇 대표작들은 거의 모두 번역되었다. 1960-1980년대는 임어당 작 품이 한국에 번역소개된 전성기라고 할 수 있다. 이 시기에 임어당의 소설과 수필들은 폭넓게 번역되어『임어당전집』까지 발간되었다. 1992년 한중 수교 이후, 한국에서 임어당에 대한 번 역과 소개는 새로운 단계에 들어섰다. 대표작의 재번역이 대량으로 나왔으며, 임어당에 대한 연구도 활발하게 전개되었다.임어당의 작품이 한국에 번역 소개되는데 나타난 특징은 장르, 작품, 역자 등 3가지 측면에서 파악할 수 있다. 장르 면에서 보면 소설보다 산문, 수필을 위주 로 번역되었다. 작품 면에서 보면 <생활의 발견> 등 대표작을 중심으로 다양한 역본이 나타 났다. 역자 면에서 보면 역자는 대부분이 한국의 유명한 중문, 영문 학자들이었다. 임어당 작 품이 한국으로의 번역소개는 한중 문화교류의 한 창구로 볼 수 있다. 그의 작품에 담긴 한적 한 생활 태도, 동서양 융합의 문화관, 그리고 그의 유머는 한국 독자들의 적극적인 호응을 받 았다. 임어당은 한국을 포함한 동양의 전통문화와 정신을 긍정적으로 평가하고 한중 양국 간 의 문화교류와 우호 증진에도 중요한 공헌을 하였다.
