This paper aims to examine the trends of research in Saemaul Undong (The New Community Development Movement), which has been conducted from 1970s to date in Korea, to discover the characteristics underlying them, to discuss the possibility that the studies on Saemaul Undong could become an independent academic discipline, and to put forward some suggestions for its studies to be established as a discipline, based on pre-requisites regarding disciplinarity. In doing so, this study employs Network Text Analysis to analyze the research trends in Saemaul Undong, ranging the academic articles dealing with Saemaul Undong from dissertations. Furthermore, this article puts forward some suggestions which could strengthen the disciplinarity of the Saemaul Undong studies. The analysis result shows that the research works on Saemaul Undong, which have been done up until now, can be sufficient groundworks for being an independent discipline. The author suggests that more inter-disciplinary and trans-disciplinary research methodology be utilized in the field of Saemaul Undong research.

본 연구는 1970년대 박정희 대통령에 의해 추진되어 한국의 빈곤퇴치와 경제발전에 크게 영향을 미친 것으로 평가받고 있는 새마을운동에 대하여, 첫째, 그동안의 새마을운동에 관련된 연구경향을 학문적으로 분석하여 그 특징을 도출하고, 둘째, 새마을운동에 관한 연구가 하나의 연구물에 그치는 것이 아니라, 하나의 독자적 학문으로서 발전할 수 있는지 그 가능성을 탐색해 보며, 셋째, 하나의 독자적 학문으로서 ‘새마을학’의 향후 발전방향을 제시해 보고자 하는 것이다. 이를 위해서 1970년대부터 2012년까지 수행된 연구들 -학위논문 및 학술지 논문-에 대해서 네트워크 텍스트 분석방법을 적용하여 연구경향을 분석하며, 학문의 구성조건을 기준으로 하여 새마을운동에 관한 연구가 하나의 독자적 학문이 될 수 있는지 탐색해 보았다. 그 결과, 새마을운동의 주요연구대상들은 몇 가지 차원으로 구분될 수 있었으며, 학문의 구성조건을 통해서 볼 때 새마을운동 연구는 독자적 학문으로 성립할 수 있다고 평가된다.
