Animal waste biomass is a potentially utilized renewable material and energy such as compost, methane which are increasing dramatically with rapid urbanization. Korea has experienced fast-paced urbanization over the past three decades. This paper provides a synthesis of literature and experimental data to trace the potential of animal waste biomass for renewable material and energy production in Korea. The use of animal waste biomass for recycling for material and energy production will contribute to the construction of low- carbon cities. However there are still many difficulties. The main challenges are how to quantity the available animal waste biomass accurately and technical, financial issues with the exploitation of animal waste biomass, which recycling. Finally we provide several practical suggestion for the future development of animal waste biomass for recycling in urban areas could be a win-win approach for mitigation both the burden of disposed costs and the climate change crisis. In Korea, mostly animal waste biomass is recovered for soild and liquid composting. Korea has experienced the fastest urbanization since the 1980s, Land use and land cover changed dramatically in the process of urbanization and the amount of animal waste biomass is increasing quickly with the urban expansion. Challenges and strategies for developing the use of animal waste biomass for recycling are discussed. The conclusions could also provide a potential alternative option for solving climate change, environmental and energy problems in Korea.
