This research analyzes the concept of love expressed in On the Love of God by St.Bernard of Clairvaux in the 12th century and relates it to the Korean church of the 21st century. Bernard teaches four steps of love according to the spiritual growth of a believer. First, the believer loves himself for himself by an innate self-love. The believer, however, needs to practice loving neighbors, since the self-love is a kind of selfish love. Second, the believer loves God for His grace. When the believer realizes that he or she is miserable spiritually, the believer loves God to seek His mercy. Third, the believer loves God for God himself. When the believer maintains an intimate love relationship with God for His mercy, the believer learns the goodness of God. Thus, the believer begins to love God for God Himself. Fourth, the believer once again loves himself for himself. The believer appreciates the worth of the state in which he experiences the overwhelming love of God. When he or she is filled with the love of God, he or she is also united with God's will. Then, the believer understands God's will in his or her life and commits his or her life to God's will. At the same time, the believer transcends the pressures and concerns of earthly life, since he or she only wishes to practice the will of God, no matter how demanding life is. This research then reflects upon the Korean church. First, it helps the Korean church appreciate the meaning of Christian love. Understanding its value allows the pursuit of experiencing love through activities like worshipping and studying the Bible. Second, it directs the Korean church to focus on the sanctification of its members. In general, the church has focused on the empowerment of the Holy Spirit, which is characteristic of charismatic spirituality. One of the reasons why the Korean church displays a lack of the fruits of sanctification is because the church did not remain in the activities of the Holy Spirit long enough for the purification and illumination of the soul. Third, it guides the Korean church to be the giver of life. When the believer habitually abides in the presence of God's love, the kingdom of God is realized in the believer's inner world. The believer is filled with the life God characterizes by love, peace, and joy. When individual members of the church experience such divine life, the life in the church expands beyond the walls of the church. The church then becomes a community of life for a society that is thirsty for true life.

본 논문은 12세기 사랑신비주의 영성가였던 성 버나드(St. Bernard of Clairvaux)의 “하나님의 사랑에 관하여(On the Love of God)"에 표현된 사랑의 개념을 분석하고 한국교회에 주는 통찰을 숙고하였다. 버나드는 신자가 영적 성숙에 따라 경험하는 4단계의 사랑에 대하여 말하였다. 첫째, 자신을 위한 자기 사랑으로 신자의 본성적 자기 사랑을 의미한다. 본성적 자기 사랑은 이기적인 사랑으로 신자는 이기적인 사랑을 극복하기 위해 이웃 사랑을 실천해야 한다. 둘째, 하나님의 은혜를 위한 하나님 사랑이다. 신자가 자신의 영적인 비참함을 경험할 때 신자는 하나님의 자비를 구하게 된다. 셋째, 하나님을 위한 하나님 사랑이다. 신자가 자신의 영적인 필요에 의해 하나님을 사랑하고 하나님과 교제하다보면 하나님의 선하심을 깨닫게 되어 하나님의 하나님 되심에 대하여 사랑하게 된다. 넷째, 자신을 위한 하나님 사랑이다. 이것은 하나님의 사랑 가운데 머물러 있는 자신을 위한 하나님 사랑이다. 피조되지 않은 신적 사랑의 임재에 압도되어 있는 상태를 추구하는 것을 의미한다. 이러한 경험의 결과로 신자는 하나님의 뜻만 추구하게 되며 하나님과 동행하는 삶을 살게 된다. 그것은 세상사의 압박을 초월하게 한다. 하나님의 임재가 세상의 염려로부터 자유롭게 하는 것이다. 버나드의 가르침이 한국교회에 주는 실천적 적용으로 세 가지를 숙고하였다. 첫째, 한국교회에게 기독교적 의미의 사랑의 가치를 재인식하게 해 준다. 한국교회가 그러한 가치를 인식할 때 한국교회는 예배와 교회 프로그램을 포함하는 신앙 생활의 전 영역을 통해 그러한 사랑의 경험을 추구하게 될 것이다. 둘째, 성령의 능력을 추구하는 카리스마의 영성에서 성화의 영성을 추구하게 될 것이다. 카리스마의 영성이 강한 한국교회가 성화의 영성이 약한 이유는 신자의 내면을 정화하고 조명하는 성령의 활동 가운데 충분히 머물지 않기 때문이다. 그런데 성령의 임재를 통한 하나님의 임재 가운데 충분히 오래 머물 때 날마다 성화되는 길을 가게 될 것이다. 셋째, 생명을 주는 교회가 될 것이다. 신적 사랑 가운데 머물면 신자의 내면 속에 하나님의 생명이 넘치는 하나님의 나라가 형성되는데 그러한 신자들이 모이는 한국교회는 한국사회속에서 자연스럽게 생명을 주는 공동체가 될 것이다.
