The article deals with the problematics about the status of the sacraments in Protestant liturgies and theologies in view of contemporary thought patterns. Even though the Reformation emphasized the balance and interrelationship between the “Word” and the sacraments in principle and practice, it had difficulty in maintaining the actual balance because the historical setting made it give weight to the former. Especially, influenced by the modern naturalistic rationalism, even the nominally kept balance was lost. Though the importance of the sacraments has been recognized and the frequency of its practices increased since the mid-twentieth century, the problem is that the status of the sacraments in Protestant liturgies and theologies still remains ambiguous because Protestant churches’ concerns with the sacraments were brought about by situational changes external to the sacraments rather than by a theological awakening about them as such. Especially the relationship between the “Word” and the sacraments is not understandably established in the Protestant traditions that have emphasized the Word and revelation; and then the significances of the Eucharist remains obscure while it may be now more frequently performed. The article attempts to explicate the status and significances of the sacraments in connection with the “Word,” especially in light of the contemporary situations and thought patterns. The significances of the sacraments are not a result of situations and thought trends, but they are in fact influenced by them. The article demonstrates two ironic approaches. On the one hand, it uses the traditional Word theology as an access to the significances of the sacraments and at the same time has it expose the necessary status of the sacraments through its disclosed limitation. That is, the Protestant word theology itself requires the necessity of the sacraments. On the other, it shows that the contemporary thought trend, which cannot accept the sacraments because of its denying the supernatural reality presupposed by the sacraments, supports the sacramental significances by its discovery of the body-bound nature of human language and episteme and its hermeneutic expansion of the boundary of text and sign. The argumental point of the article is that the sacraments are intended to be a optimum revelatory means to metaphorically and analogically disclose the incarnate Word and then in this sense the sacraments should be balanced with the Bible as another revelatory means and be worked as an interpretive guidance for the latter. Therefore, the sacraments are another Word, whose status should be restored in worship and theology.

본고는 개신교의 예전과 신학에 있어서 성례전의 위치 문제를 현대적 사고경향을 배경으로 다룬다. 종교개혁은 “말씀”과 성례전의 균형과 상호관계를 원론적 및 실천적으로 강조했음에도 역사적 맥락상 전자에 비중을 더 둠으로 실제적 균형유지가 어려웠다. 특히 근대의 자연주의적 합리주의의 영향과 함께 그나마 명목상으로 유지되던 균형마저 붕괴되고 말았다. 20세 중반부터 성례전의 중요성이 재인식되고 특히 성만찬의 거행빈도가 늘어나는 추세는 다행이지만 문제는 성례전에 대한 개신교의 관심이 성례전 자체에 대한 신학적 각성보다 외적인 상황변화에 따라 생겼기 때문에 개신교 예배와 신학에서 성례전의 위치는 여전히 애매하다는 것이다. 특히 “말씀”과 계시를 강조해 온 개신교 전통에서 “말씀”과 성례전의 관계가 명확히 설정되지 않고 있으며 따라서 예배에서 보다 많은 성만찬을 거행한다 해도 성만찬의 의의는 모호한 상태로 남아 있는 것이다. 본고는 “말씀”과의 관계에서 성례전의 위치와 의의를 해명하되 특히 성례전의 가치를 다시금 주목하게 만든 현대적 상황과 사고패턴과의 관계에서 조명한다. 성례전의 의의는 상황과 사조의 산물이 아님에도 상황과 사조의 영향을 받아왔기 때문이다. 본고는 두 가지 반어적 접근을 보여준다. 한 편에서 성례전을 개신교의 전통적인 말씀신학의 틀을 통해 접근하면서 전통적인 말씀신학의 한계를 드러내는 방식으로 성례전의 당위적 위치를 확인한다. 즉 개신교의 말씀신학 자체가 성례전을 불가피하게 요청한다는 것이다. 다른 한 편에서 성례전이 전제하는 초자연적 실재에 대한 거부로 성례전을 수용할 수 없는 현대적 사고가 오히려 인간 언어와 인식의 신체-물리적 제약성과 텍스트와 기호의 해석학적 확장에 의해 성례전적 의의를 지지한다는 것이다. 본고의 논지는 성례전은 성육적 말씀을 은유적 및 유비적으로 드러내는 최적의 계시적 수단으로 의도되었으며 이 점에서 성례전은 또 다른 계시적 수단인 성경과 균형을 이루면서 성경을 안내하는 역할을 한다는 것이다. 따라서 성례전은 말씀으로서의 성경과 균형을 이뤄야 하는, 필수적인 또 다른 말씀으로서 그 위치를 예배와 신학에서 회복해야 한다는 것이다.
