Traditionally the Presbyterian Churches have two significant references related to their worship. One is the Book of Worship to present the various forms of worship as the model of the Presbyterian worship, and the other is the Directory for Worship that deals with the spirit and principle of their worship. Until now, however, most of the Korean Presbyterian Churches have been interested primarily in the Book of Worship but not in the Directory for Worship. They have treated it like a relic of the past that consists of a part of the book of the Presbyterian Constitution. As the result of neglecting their own tradition and value of worship, the present Korean Presbyterian Church is confronted with a serious chaos and an identity crisis in their worship. Facing such a situation, this article is written to rediscover the value of the Directory for Worship as the spirit and principle of the Presbyterian worship and to urge its application in the worship field of the Korean Presbyterian Church.

장로교회는 예배와 관련하여 두 가지 중요한 자료를 가지고 있다. 하나는 장로교 예배의 형식을 제시해주는 “예배서”요, 다른 하나는 장로교 예배의 정신과 원리에 대한 지침을 제시해주는 “예배모범”이다. 그 동안 대부분 한국 장로교회들은 자신들의 예배 형식을 다루는 “예배서”에는 상당한 관심을 기울여왔지만, 이에 비하여 “예배모범”에는 그렇지를 못했었다. 마치 “예배모범”은 장로교 헌법책의 한 부분을 장식하는 유물 정도로 취급을 한 것이다. 자신들의 예배에 대한 역사적 전통과 가치를 소홀히 해온 결과, 현 한국 장로교회는 장로교회로서 자신들의 예배에 대한 정체성을 잃어버리고 혼란에 빠져 있는 상황이다. 본 논문은 이런 시대적 상황에서 오늘의 한국 장로교회의 예배가 그 본질에 보다 충실할 수 있어야 한다는 점을 새롭게 인식하면서, 자신들의 예배 정신과 원리를 제공해주고 있는 예배모범의 가치를 재발견하고, 이를 예배 현장에서 적극 활용할 수 있도록 하기 위해서 시도된 것이다. 이를 위해서 장로교 예배모범에 대한 역사적 이해와 함께, 현 한국 장로교 주요 교단의 예배모범을 비교 분석하고, 이를 토대로 하여 한국 장로교 예배를 위한 몇 가지 제언을 하고자 한다.
