The purpose of this study is to explore academic characteristics of church growth in light of integration and connection with social science, as well as to discuss the future direction for developing church growth based on evaluation from a viewpoint of practical theology. Through such discussion, this study also attempts to talk about how practical theology should be developed. Practical theology, born in the mid-19th century, has been divided and specialized into several categories to the trends of social science. However, excessive specialization of each category resulted in weakening its connection with others. For this reason, practical theology needed an academic methodology to integrate its many disciplines. Church growth satisfies such a need by integrating the diverse disciplines of practical theology based on the missional concern of the triune God. To grow healthily, the church must develop its internal areas and external areas in balance, viewing itself as an organism. Not only does it value theological understandings related to the church and its ministries, church growth also actively utilizes academic results of social science to effectively apply those understandings into its ministries. In fact, church growth began with the intent of analyzing both growing and non-growing churches in mission fields to identify reasons of growth and stagnation. To accomplish this, church growth experts utilize social science methodologies including area studies, diverse research methods, strategies, planning, and organization management. Such academic attitude is based on the belief that healthy church growth needs the power of the Gospel related to the biblical text as well as an understanding of situational conditions around the church. It is very pragmatic for church growth to seeks development of diverse human means based on methods derived from social science in order to achieve God’s holy plan of redemption. Nevertheless, the attitude that church growth takes is not unconditional pragmatism but methodological pragmatism. While advocates for the former believe in using any kind of ways and means ignoring ethical dimensions, advocates for the latter believe that every method should be subordinated to the Kingdom of God and God’s mission(Missio Dei). Clearly, methodology of social science cannot be an end in itself, and must be used only within theological frameworks. As such, I set three─biblical principles, life of the faith community, and missional context─as methodological elements of church growth, and present their reciprocal relations as the methodological structure of church growth.

본 연구의 목적은 통섭성과 사회과학적 연계성의 관점에서 교회성장학이 가지고 있는 학문적 특성을 정리하고, 그것을 실천신학적 관점에서 평가하고 교회성장학이 앞으로 어떻게 발전해야 하는지 논하는 것이다. 그리고 더 나아가 본 연구는 이런 논의를 통해서 실천신학이 어떻게 발전해야 하는지를 말하고자 한다. 19세기 중반에 태동한 실천신학은 근대 이후에 발전한 사회과학의 경향을 따라 여러 가지 분야로 분화되고 전문화되었다. 그러나 각 분야들은 지나치게 전문화됨으로써 다른 분야와의 연계성이 약해지는 결과를 초래하고 있다. 이에 따라 각 개별 학문들을 통섭적으로 아우를 수 있는 학문적 방법론의 필요성이 대두되었다. 그런데 교회성장학은 삼위일체 하나님의 선교적 관심 아래 실천신학의 제반 학문 분야들을 하나로 묶는 특성을 가지고 있다. 건전하고 건강한 교회성장을 이루기 위해서는 교회의 내적 영역과 외적 영역에 속한 목회의 여러 분야들이 균형 있게 발전해야 한다는 점에서 교회성장학은 실천신학의 다양한 제 분야들을 통합적으로 아우르고 그것들의 상호 유기적 연관성을 도모하는 학문이라고 볼 수 있다. 또한 교회성장학은 기본적으로 교회성장에 관한 신학적 이해를 중시하면서도 교회성장을 효과적으로 실천하기 위해 사회과학의 학문적 결과들을 적극적으로 활용한다. 교회성장학은 처음부터 선교 현장에서 성장하는 교회들과 성장하지 않는 교회들을 관찰하고 분석함으로써 성장 또는 침체의 원인을 밝혀내려는 의도에서 출발하였다. 이런 목적을 달성하기 위해서 교회성장학자들은 지역 연구, 다양한 조사 연구 방법, 전략 수립, 조직과 인사관리 등을 연구하고 적용한다. 교회성장학이 이처럼 사회과학적 방법을 적극적으로 활용하는 이유는 교회성장에 텍스트(text) 곧 복음의 능력만이 중요한 것이 아니라 콘텍스트(context) 곧 상황에 대한 이해와 적응도 매우 중요한 요소로 작용하기 때문이다. 하나님의 거룩한 구원계획을 성취하기 위해 사회과학을 기반으로 한 다양한 인간적인 도구를 개발하고 활용하려는 교회성장학은 매우 실용주의적인 태도를 취한다. 그런데 교회성장학의 입장은 방법론적 실용주의(the methodological pragmatism)로서 윤리적 차원을 무시한 채 결과를 위해서 어떤 수단과 방법을 사용해도 된다고 생각하는 절대적 실용주의와는 구분해야 한다. 교회성장을 위한 모든 방법론은 하나님의 나라와 하나님의 선교 개념 아래 종속되어야 한다. 따라서 사회과학적 방법들은 그 자체로 결코 목적이 될 수 없으며, 신학이 설정해 놓은 구조 안에서 도구와 수단으로만 사용되어야 한다. 필자는 이런 이해를 토대로 삼아 교회성장학 방법론의 세 요소로서 성경적 원리, 신앙 공동체의 삶과 선교적 상황을 설정하고 그것들의 상호 연관성을 학문적 방법론의 구조로 제시하였다.
