For the last half a century South Korea has experienced intense capitalistic industrialization, which has brought changes both in the labor market and in the marriage market in unprecedented ways. Since the 1990s Korean men, who were pushed to the margin in both markets, began to look for marriage partners outside the country, especially in China and South Asian countries. The increase of Korean men looking for foreign brides has created new occupation called international matchmaking. This research pays attention to the rapid increase of marriage migration from Vietnam in recent years, and analyzes the very first step of ‘multicultural family’ formation, that is, matchmaking processes, based on experiences of a Korean matchmaker and a Korean man introduced to a Vietnamese woman by the former. What kind of life situations a Korean man are in when he decides to look outside the country in order to find a marriage partner? Which countries are preferred by Korean men for international marriage and why? What are the terms and conditions of international matchmaking? What are the specific characteristics of business policies and practices that an international matchmaker has? What are detailed procedures from matchmaking(ma’tson) to marriage ritual in Vietnam? What are the perspectives that a matchmaker and a man married to a Vietnamese woman have on international marriage? By focusing on those questions, this research demonstrates how international marriage help us understand unequal relationships between bride-sending and bride-receiving countries. It also examines how a ‘multicultural family’ is formed through competition and negotiation among a matchmaker, a groom-to-be, and a bride-to-be as cultural interlocutors. Both a Korean man and a Vietnamese woman come to ma’tson, make decisions on marriage, and begin family life together with their own motivations and strategies under given life conditions. In ‘multicultural families’ of the Korean society where the pressure of cultural assimilation is strong, actualization of family relationships and practices continuously disturb defined gender roles and challenge existing family ideologies. International matchmaking is a precursor of rapid transformation in Korean family structure.

우리 사회는 지난 반세기 여 동안에 강도 높은 산업화와 자본주의화를 추진해 오면서 노동시장뿐만 아니라 결혼시장에도 커다란 변화를 일으키고 있다. 1990년대부터 노동시 장과 결혼시장에서 주변부로 밀려 난 한국남성들은 외국, 특히 중국과 동남아 국가로 눈 을 돌려 배우자를 찾기 시작하였고, 그 수가 급증하면서 국제결혼 중개사업이라는 신종 직업이 출현했다. 본 연구는 실제로 결혼중개사업을 했던 남성과 그를 통해 베트남 여성 을 소개받고 결혼을 한 남성의 경험을 접목해 봄으로써 ‘다문화가족’ 형성의 초기 단계를 보다 심층적으로 이해해 보고자 한다. 본 논문에서는 한국남성은 어떤 개인적인 이유와 과정을 거쳐서 베트남에 맞선을 보러 가는지, 결혼중개업자의 사업운영방법은 무엇인지, 맞선의 구체적인 과정은 무엇인지, 그리고 이들이 갖고 있는 국제결혼에 대한 시각은 어 떠한지 등을 살펴볼 것이다. 국제결혼중개는 유입국과 송출국 간의 사회구조적인 만남을 가장 적나라하게 보여주는 현상이다. ‘다문화가족’ 형성에 단초를 제공하는 남성주체들은 각자 처해 있는 위치와 조건 하에서 주체적인 동기와 전략을 가지고 결혼결정을 하고, 결 혼과정을 밟고, 그리고 가족생활을 시작하게 된다. 문화적인 매개자들인 한국남성과 결 혼이주여성은 ‘다문화가족’이라는 장(site)에서 서로 경합하고 타협을 벌이면서 함께 가족 생활을 실천해 나가는 것이다. 이들의 실천은 기존의 가족관계 및 성역할의 범주를 끊임 없이 교란시키면서 도전을 하고 있는데, 그 출발점은 바로 국제결혼중개이다.
