‘Pororo the Little Penguin’, the indigenous character of Korea, has become the idol in the world, not confined to Korea, unlike previous cartoon characters. This study aims to look into the inner characteristics of the characters appearing in ‘Pororo the Little Penguin’ based on empirical approach. For that, the characters appearing in ‘Pororo the Little Penguin’ were divided into the expressive images and content images, using the semantic structure model of Roland Barthes, to examine the mythology and identify the characteristics of characters through Enneagram, thus classifying the characters into specific categories. In this study, the 7 characters appearing in ‘Pororo the Little Penguin' were analyzed, and the results showed that there was significant similarity among the types of characters identified through the mythological structure model and Enneagram. Those results indicated the consistency between the characters and images which were expressed and acted by each character appearing in the animation ‘Pororo the Little Penguin’. A cornerstone for successful production of animation will be laid if the characters are assigned in such a way that they are designed to be consistent with the formative and expressive images based on the recognition of importance of characters in domestic production of animations.

순수 한국 토종 캐릭터들로 만들어진 ‘뽀롱뽀롱 뽀로로’는 이전의 만화 캐릭터들처럼 우리만의 우상으 로 그치지 않고 세계의 우상으로 자리 잡고 있다. 본 연구를 통해 ‘뽀롱뽀롱 뽀로로’에 등장하는 캐릭터 들에 대한 내적 성격을 실증적으로 연구하고자 한다. 롤랑바르트의 ‘의미구조 모형’을 이용하여 ‘뽀롱 뽀롱 뽀로로’ 캐릭터들을 ‘표현 이미지’와 ‘내용 이미지’로 나누어 신화를 알아보고, 에니어그램을 통해 캐릭터의 특징을 밝히면서 성격을 유형화 한다. ‘뽀롱뽀롱 뽀로로’에 나오는 7개의 캐릭터를 분석한 결과, 신화 구조 모형을 통해 나온 신화와 에니어 그램을 통해 나온 성격유형이 매우 동일하였다. 이 결과는 곧 애니메이션 ‘뽀롱뽀롱 뽀로로’에 등장하 는 캐릭터마다 표현되고 행동되는 이미지와 성격이 잘 일치하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 향 후 국내의 애 니메이션 제작에 있어서 캐릭터의 중요성을 인지하고 캐릭터를 디자인 하는데 있어서 형태 및 표현 이미지에 일치하도록 성격을 부여한다면, 성공적인 애니메 이션 제작을 하는데 밑바탕이 될 것이다.
