This study explores the relationship between social networking services (SNS) and electoral campaign and examines the effects of parliamentary candidates’ social networking activities on the rate of votes earned and election results in the 19th general election in Seoul, Korea. Before empirically testing the relationship between SNS and electoral campaign, this study reviews the literature concerning the roles of SNS in electoral campaign, influence of these services in real politics such as elections, and explanations on how social media such as Twitter affect the election results. Results from logistic and ordinary least square (OLS) regression models which simultaneously controls for factors which that are theorized to affect the results of general elections indicate that a positive relationship exists between active social networking activities based on Twitter of parliamentary candidates with voters and their rate of votes earned and their winning in the election.

이 연구에서는 후보의 SNS 활용과 선거 결과 간의 관계를 서울시 19대 총선 후보자들의 트위터캠페인을중심으로실증적으로분석하였다. 주요분석결과를정리하면다음과같다. 첫째, 후보의 트위터 계정보유여부와개설 단계에 따른당선여부를살펴보면, 후보의 인 적 특성과 선거구 특성을 고려할 때, 후보가 트위터 계정을 통해 선거운동을 한 경우가 그 렇지 않는 경우에 비해 국회의원에 당선될 확률이 더 높은 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 후보 의 이념 성향이 진보적일수록 국회의원에 당선될 확률이 더 높은 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 후보의 트위터 계정 보유 여부와 개설 단계에 따른 득표율 정도를 살펴보면, 후보의 인적 특성과선거구특성을고려할때, 트위터계정을통해캠페인에참가할수록, 남성보다는여 성일수록, 국회의원 선수가 많을수록 득표율이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 후보가 트위 터계정을개설한시기가빠를수록, 남성보다는여성일수록득표율이더높게나타났다. 셋 째, 선거 기간의 트위터 플랫폼 활용에 따른 득표율 정도를 살펴보면, 후보의 인적 특성과 선거구 특성을 고려할 때, 선거 기간 동안 후보의 팔로어 증가수가 많을수록 그리고 후보 트윗의 리트윗수가 많을수록 후보의 득표율이 높은 것으로 나타났다.
