초록

영어

This study looks into the perception codes of Korea present in social studies textbooks in Southeast Asia where the so-called Korean Wave or Hanryu is sweeping across the region. Perception codes of Korea present in social studies textbooks in Singapore are strongly negative. Korea is synonymous with ‘subject country to China’ and ‘war’ in textbooks in the 1980s and ‘Korean War’ in textbooks in the 1990s onwards. Perception codes of Korea in Malaysian textbooks include ‘aid from US’ in the 1980s, ‘New Village Movement’ and ‘Penang Bridge’ in the 1990s, ‘Kia and Kia and Najamotiv Motors’ and ‘Samsung and Hyundai’ after 2000. This tells that Korea is perceived as an advanced industrial country that transfers its technologies in Malaysia. Perception codes of Korea in Indonesian textbooks include ‘subject country to China and Japan’ in the 1980s, ‘Tiger of Asia’ and the ‘Korean War’ in the 1990s, ‘subject country to China and Japan’, ‘Korean War’ and ‘Tiger of Asia’ after 2000. They are pretty consistent in Indonesia as demonstrated in the same codes repeatedly used in the textbooks throughout the decades. Social studies textbooks in Vietnam use such perception codes of Korea as ‘emerging industrial country’ in the 1990s and ‘emerging industrial country’ and the ‘Vietnam War’ after 2000. Its perception of Korea as an emerging industrial country clearly shows that Korea is Vietnam’s role model in spearheading its economic opening and reform initiatives. Perception codes of Korea in Philippines’ social studies textbooks are most varied among other countries in Southeast Asia with positive and negative ones mixed together. What starkly differentiates social studies textbooks in the Philippines from other countries in the region is that it uses such codes like ‘Christianity’ and the ‘Korean culture’ to perceive Korea. Words such as ‘military officers and Christianity’, ‘Yoido Full Gospel Church’ and ‘Prime Minister Han Myungsook’ emphasizes the degree of impact Christianity had on the overall Korean society and particularly on Korea’s economic development, gender equality and human rights of women. Words like ‘Hangeul’, ‘Chungja’, ‘Cheomsungdae’, ‘Palmandaejangkyung’ and ‘Hanryu’ in the textbooks is a demonstration of how Korea is perceived as a country rich in traditional and contemporary culture, advanced in science and technology from a long time ago. Social studies textbooks in Thailand use codes like ‘colonial rule under China and Japan’, the ‘Korean War’ in the 1980s, ‘Independence Movement’, ‘Korean War’ in the 1990s, ‘Korean War’, ‘advanced industrial country’, ‘Hanryu’, ‘Hanbok’, ‘Kimchi’, ‘Taekwondo’ and ‘World Cultural Heritage’ after 2000 to perceive Korea. Thailand started to associate Korea with Hanryu from 2000, which is a big departure from its perceptions in the 1980s and 1990s, and tried to expand its concept as viewed by Thailand to ‘Korea’s fashion culture’, ‘Korea’s food culture’ and ‘Korea’s global culture’. As described above, perception codes of Korea in countries in Southeast Asia are bound to vary depending on their relations with Korea and changes in their political, economic and social conditions even though they are all located in the same regional boundary. New perception codes of Korea in social studies textbooks in Southeast Asia such as ‘Korea=Cheomsungdae’, ‘Korea=Boys over flowers’ and ‘Korea=Bulgogi’ are a vivid proof that Korea is seen as one of the countries developing and driving global cultural contents beyond mere an emerging industrial country that achieved phenomenal economic growth after the end of the Korean War.
