The classification of vessel types is closely related to vessel function. Existing studies and reports have attempted to classify Neolithic pottery into storage, cooking and serving vessels based on rim diameter, but it can be argued that this is a problematic approach. In more recent years, computer programs (such as Maple 7.0, CAD) have been utilized for more accurate capacity measurements, as have been Rhinoceros 3D programs. Several points have been made regarding the classification models of Neolithic pottery. The biggest problem is the classification of vessel types or forms in the absence of concepts regarding classification criteria and regulations. Problems were identified with the following: first, the process of distinguishing between flat and round-shaped bases; second, the process of distinguishing between round or deep bowl shaped vessel bodies; third, the process of distinguishing between jars and large jars or deep bowls and large jars; and fourth, the conceptualization of small vessels. Therefore, alternative modes of classification were proposed for Neolithic pottery. Other issues were considered as well, such as whether to classify pottery according to form or function. It is suggested that the best method is to first classify according to base shape, and then according to overall form. It can be argued that names given to pottery based on this scheme will provide an easy understanding of them.

우리나라 신석기시대 토기는 연구자 또는 조사기관에 따라 각기 문양 혹은 기종과 관련해 다른 명칭을 사용함으로써 토기연구에 많은 혼란이 야기되고 있다. 신석기시대 토기기종은 개념 규정이나 논의 없이 주관적인 판단에 의해 사용되거나 검토조차 이루 어지지 않은 경우가 많다. 이는 신석기유적에서 출토되는 빗살무늬토기의 경우 완형(完形)이나 기형을 파악할 수 있는 개체수가 적어 나타나는 현상으로 볼 수 있으며, 또한 연구자의 관심 부족도 이와 같은 요인 중 하나라고 할 수 있다. 이에 신석기시대 토기 의 기종분류와 활용방안에 대해 기존 연구성과와 보고서 등의 사례분석을 통한 현황과 문제점을 살펴보고 그 대안을 제시해 보고자 하였다. 토기의 기종분류는 토기의 기능과 밀접하게 관련되어 있는데, 기존의 연구나 보고서 에서는 토기의 입술지름을 기준으로 하여 저장, 조리, 배식용 등으로 용도 구분이 이루 어져 많은 문제점이 있다. 그러나 최근에는 컴퓨터 프로그램(Maple7.0, CAD 등)이 활용되고 있어 보다 정확한 용량측정이 가능해 졌으며, Rhinoceros 3D프로그램을 이용하면 정교한 토기용량 측정과 다양한 활용이 가능하다. 또한 신석기시대 토기의 기종분류에 있어 몇 가지 문제점을 제기하였는데, 가장 큰 문제점은 분류 기준과 개념규정 없이 기형이나 기종을 분류하고 있는 점이다. 이와 관 련하여 첫째 빗살무늬토기의 바닥 구분에 사용되는 첨저와 원저의 구분, 둘째 발형과 완형의 분류, 셋째 호와 옹 또는 심발과 옹의 구분기준, 넷째 소형토기의 개념문제 등 에 대해 문제점과 그 대안을 제시하였다. 이밖에 신석기시대 토기의 분류에 있어 기형 을 중심으로 할 것인가? 아니면 기능을 중심으로 분류하여 명칭를 부여할 것인가?의 문제가 있다. 필자는 1차로 바닥형태를 기준으로 하고, 2차로 전체적인 형태를 기준으 로 명명되는 것이 토기기종을 이해하기 쉬운 명명 방법이라 판단하였다. 마지막으로 신석기시대 토기의 기종분류를 통해 당시 식생활문화에 대한 적극적인 추론이나 연구가 필요하며, 북한의 연구사례에서 보듯 다소 황당할 수 있는 주장을 하 고 있지만 이러한 시도는 신석기인들의 다양한 음식문화와 식생활을 밝히기 위한 과정 이라 생각된다. 이는 토기에 대한 과학적인 분석과 다양한 연구 방법론의 적용이 뒷받 침되어야 가능한 것이다. 앞으로 좀 더 면밀한 기종분류의 기준과 적용 및 과학적 분석 을 통해 신석기인들의 식생활을 복원할 수 있기를 기대해본다.
