The purpose of this study is to investigate the importance of stairs and to provide information on exploring desirable directions for stairs' designs by analyzing the transition characteristics for stairs in the museum building. The research method was as follows: 1) Preparatory study and literature reviews to extract the transition characteristics of stairs 2) Based on the transition characteristics of stairs, each stairs in the museum building was evaluated. The results of the case study show that the stairs in transition space of museum building built since 1990 were appeared aspect of transition characteristics. It was concluded that the stairs in the museum building should accommodate and provide transition characteristics such as spatial continuity, content continuity, and visual perspective continuity for enhancing the interactive atmosphere within the people in the museum building.

본 연구는 1990년대 이후 건축된 박물관건축물을 통해 사회의 다양화와 가치관 변화에 따라 야기되는 계단공간의 변화와 이에 따라 요구되는 전이공간으로서의 계단의 특성을 분석함으로써 계단의 중요성을 규명하고 이의 활성화 방안을 모색하는데 있다. 선행 연구 및 문헌고찰, 사례조사를 통해 전이공간으로서의 계단에 대한 개념과 특성을 알아보고, 공간의 인식변화와 이를 통해 나타나는 계단공간의 특성변화를 도출하며, 도출된 특성을 토대로 사례별 박물관건축물의 계단공간을 중심으로 이의 전이적 공간특성을 분석하였다. 연구결과 1990년 이후에 건축된 박물관건축물의 계단은 내부공간을 통합하는 장치로서, 보행과정상의 시각적 체험 장치로서 그 기본적 기능만이 아닌 건축물의 전체를 경험하게 하는 요소로서 전이적 공간특성을 지닌 것으로 나타났다. 공간과 공간간의 매개적 요소, 인간행위의 촉매요소, 지각 인식요소로서의 역할을 더욱 더 활성화하기 위하여 박물관건축물의 계단은 공간적, 형태적, 상징적 전이특성요소가 공간구성요소로서 계획되어야 하며 향후 많은 연구가 필요하다.
