This study tried to explain the confidence in the police among Korean citizens based on the expressive perspective. Data for the current study was obtained from the World Values Survey (WVS) 2005. Total 1,189 surveys were included in the final statistical analysis after cleaning missing data. Including various socio-demographic variables and social perspective variables, logistic regression on the confidence in the police was analyzed. In the findings, as people 1) perceived that the country’s democracy was well developed, 2) showed conservative political orientation, 3) perceived that the individual human right was protected, 4) perceived that they can trust their neighbors, and 5) showed higher level of satisfaction on their life, showed the higher tendency to select ‘having confidence in the police.’ Among several independent variables, ‘individual human right’ and ‘trust neighbors’ were the most strongest factor in explaining confidence in the police. Even though the current study has limitations with using the secondary data, this study was able to generalize the findings into the entire Korean population by using representative sample.

본 연구는 일반시민들의 경찰에 대한 신뢰도를 설명하는 시각 중에서 표현적 시각의 경찰신뢰도 접근방식이 한국 사람들에게 잘 적용되는 지 알아보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 세계가치조사 (World Values Survey) 연구 2005년도 자료를 사용하여 1,189명으로부터 면접한 자료를 분석 하였다. 여러 가지 인구사회학적 변수와 사회인식에 대한 변수들을 독립변수로 삼아 로지스틱 회귀 분석을 실시하였다. 그 결과 민주주의정도가 높다고 생각하는 사람일수록, 정치적 성향이 보수적인 사람일수록, 개인의 인권이 존중되고 있다고 생각하는 사람일수록, 이웃 간의 신뢰가 높은 사람일수록, 그리고 개인의 삶에 대한 만족도가 높은 사람일수록 경찰에 대한 신뢰가 높다고 나왔다. 개인인권존중과 이웃 간의 신뢰가 경찰에 대한 신뢰도와 가장 큰 관계를 보이는 변수로 파악 되었다. 본 연구는 2차 자료 분석의 한계가 있으나 보다 대표성이 있는 전국을 대상으로 표본을 수집하여 표현적 시각의 경찰신뢰도를 검증한 연구로서 가치가 있다고 할 것이다.
