The present study investigated the meaning of a space as an environment for Korean language education and set up objectives and targets for education, applying the concept of locality in a way to realize the educational meaning of such space. Besides, it provided the examples of teaching-learning, reflecting the locality in Korean language education. Many educational institutes from all over the nation are participating in Korean language education. It is problematic to accept without any criticism the Korean language education which is given in Seoul area, without considering which spatial environment the learner is situated in. It is also problematic to look down on the Korean language education outside Seoul as the Korean language education in the local area. If one understands the meaning of a space as the environment for Korean language teaching-learning, one could not learn about the locality without understanding Korea in general. Nor could one learn Korea in general without understanding the locality. By making the most of the geographical area and the locality selected by the learner for teaching-learning and by setting them as the objects for learning, one can provide an individualized Korean language education specialized for each geographical area.

본고에서는 한국어 교육 환경으로서 공간이 어떤 의미를 가지고 있는지 살펴보고 이러한 공간의 교육적 의미를 실현하는 방안으로 로컬리티 개념을 적용한 교육 목적, 교육 목표를 설정해 보았다. 또 한국어 교육에서 로컬리티를 반영한 교수-학습의 예를 교수-학습 내용과 방법의 수준에서 구분하여 살펴보았다. 국내 한국어 교육 기관의 지역 분포가 다양해지고 서울 이외 여러 지역의 한국어 교육 기관에서 한국어 교육을 하고 있는 상황에서 국내에서 이루어지고 있는 한국어 교육이 학습자가 공간적으로 어떤 교수-학습 환경에 놓여있는가를 맥락적으로 파악하지 않고 서울 지역에서 이루어지는 한국어 교육을 아무런 비판적 인식 없이 그대로 수용하는 것은 문제가 있다. 또 서울 이외 지역에서 이루어지고 있는 한국어 교육을 ‘지방에서의 한국어 교육’이라고 하며 폄하하거나 부정적으로 보는 시각 또한 문제가 있다. 한국어 교수-학습 환경으로서 공간의 의미를 이해한다면 한국의 특성을 잘 이해하지 못한 채 지역의 로컬리티만을 학습할 수도 없으며, 지역의 로컬리티는 무시하고 한국의 일반적 특성만을 학습할 수도 없다. 학습자가 선택한 교육 지역과 그 지역의 로컬리티를 교수-학습에 가장 잘 활용함과 동시에 이를 학습의 대상으로 삼음으로써 그 지역 고유의 특화된 한국어 교육을 할 수 있을 것이다.
