The purpose of this paper is to visualize the onomatopoeia words․mimetic words in the Korean Language Textbooks. Onomatopoeia words․mimetic words has iconicity describing the sound, shape or motion and can be known by intuition for Korean. However, they are one of the vocabulary items that should be learned by the foreign students who are learning Korean language. The onomatopoeia words․mimetic words are presented by the context or illustrations in The Korean Language Textbooks. However, it will be difficult to understand the meanings of the onomatopoeia words․mimetic words when the students don’t have any background knowledge or when illustrations are not appropriate. Therefore Typography is suggested as an alternative way to visualize the onomatopoeia words․mimetic words. Typography can describe the contents and the atmosphere of the language through the visualization of letters itself or both letters and image. Therefore the onomatopoeia words․mimetic words which has iconicity, describes the sound or acoustically expresses the shape and motion that can be visualized by Typography. This study has significance of presenting the iconicity of the onomatopoeia words․mimetic words through Typography and not through the context or illustrations. Besides, it gives a possibility of application when the Korean language textbooks are developed.

이 연구는 한국어 교재에 의성어‧의태어를 시각화하여 제시하는 데에 그 목적이 있다. 의성어‧의태어는 소리나 모양, 상태, 동작을 묘사하기 위해서 사용하는 도상성을 갖춘 어휘로서 한국어를 모국어로 사용하는 화자에게는 직관적으로 알 수 있는 어휘지만 한국어를 배우는 외국인 학습자는 교육을 통해 학습해야 하는 어휘 항목 중 하나이다. 한국어 교재에서는 의성어‧의태어를 문맥이나 삽화 등을 통해서 제시하고 있는데 학습자가 의성어‧의태어에 대한 배경 지식이 없거나 적절하지 않은 삽화가 제시되는 경우에는 의성어‧의태어에 대한 학습이 어려울 것이다. 따라서 의성어‧의태어의 도상성을 시각화하는 방법으로 타이포그래피를 제시하고자 한다. 타이포그래피는 글자 자체 또는 글자와 그림을 같이 사용하여 이미지화함으로써 언어의 내용과 분위기를 전달할 수 있다. 따라서 소리를 묘사하거나 모양이나 상태를 청각적으로 표현하는 도상성을 지닌 의성어‧의태어는 타이포그래피를 통해서 시각화하여 표현할 수 있다. 의성어‧의태어는 몸짓이나 문맥, 문장, 삽화 등과 같이 여러 방법을 통해서 표현할 수 있다. 그렇지만 이 연구는 타이포그래피를 통해 의성어‧의태어가 가지고 있는 도상성을 제시하고자 하였다는 점에서 의의를 가질 것이다. 또한 향후 한국어 교재를 개발할 때 활용할 수 있는 가능성을 제시할 수 있을 것이다.
