The current school buildings and classrooms have only a little changed from those of the Japanese colonial times in Korea. So have the scenes inside the classrooms. This study proposes that the classrooms should be dealt with the educational spaces and rethinks classroom in the viewpoint of M, J, Langeveld, Dutch education theorist. Addressing the lives of children, Langeveld insisted that both supervision and privacy should be in the educational space. The modern classroom, however, stresses only supervision in terms of the classroom organization, time schedules, the rules in classroom, and new medias like television and computers. This study gives some suggestions to change classroom that should be the space of children, not the one of the surveillance of teachers.

우리의 학교 건물과 교실은 일제 식민 시기의 건물 형태와 교실 크기를 무반성적으로 유지 하고 있는 실정이며, 교실 안의 모습도 몇 십 년 전과 비교해 크게 달라지지 않고 있다. 그만 큼 교실에 대한 논의가 미미하다는 증거이기도 한데, 이 글에서는 교육적 공간으로서 교실에 대한 논의의 필요성을 밝히고, 네덜란드의 교육학자 랑에펠트(M, J, Langeveld)의 관점에서 교 실을 재조망해보고자 한다. 어린이 존재의 본질을 규명하기 위해 어린이의 삶에 주목했던 랑에펠트는 교육적 공간에 프라이버시(privacy)와 관리감독(supervision)이 공존해야 함을 강조하였다. 그러나 우리의 교실 환경은 공간의 배치 면에서, 시간 운영 면에서, 교실 내 규율 면에서, TV나 컴퓨터 등 새로운 매체의 측면에서 관리감독의 요소로 지나치게 치우쳐져 있음을 관찰할 수 있었다. 이에 교실 이 어린이의 삶의 공간으로서, 교육적 공간으로서 거듭나기 위한 고민을 논의하였다.
