This study analyzed how news frames of the South Korean press on the death of Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-Il varied depending on the times as well as the political orientation of newspaper companies. The result shows that the news reporting of the South Korean press on the Korean peninsula’s situation after the death of Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-Il were generally forcusing on military confrontation frame and strengthening security frame. Also, military security and diplomatic alliance were framed as the most dominant policy issues to deal with the situation, while conflict frames were mainly used on the issue of condolence visit by the government. However, the tone of news have changed toward emphasizing peace facilitation frame and economic instability frame around the time of Kim Jong-Il’s death. The news frames varied across newspapers. Conservative newspapers still have tendancy to view the North Korean regime as dangerous and rebellious while progressive newspapers showed relatively conciliatory framing tendencies, acknowledging North Korea as a partner for cooperation and peaceful coexistence.

이 연구는 북한 김일성과 김정일의 죽음을 보도하는 남한 언론의 프레임이 시기에 따라, 또한 신문사의 정치적 성향에 따라 어떤 차이를 보이는지를 분석했다. 분석결과, 김일성과 김정일 사망 후 한반도 정세에 대한 남한신문의 보도는 대체적으로는 안보강 화와 군사대결적 프레임 구조가 지배적으로 나타났다. 또 김일성과 김정일 사망 보도에 나타난 남한의 대북정책은 군사안보와 외교동맹이 중요한 정책 프레임으로 강조되었으 며, 정부의 조문입장에 대해서는 남남갈등이나 남북갈등과 같은 갈등 프레임이 지배적 으로 사용되었다. 하지만 그러한 경향이 김정일 사망 시기에 오면서 평화촉진 프레임과 경제불안 프레임을 강조하는 쪽으로 보도경향이 변화했다. 이러한 보도패턴이 모든 신 문에서 일관되게 나타나지는 않았다. 보수신문은 북한체제를 여전히 위험하고, 불온한 집단으로 인식하는 경향을 드러낸 반면, 진보신문은 상대적으로 북한을 협력과 평화공 존을 위한 파트너로 인식하는 유화적 프레이밍 기제를 보였다.
