Recently, many cities have embarked on urban renewal projects with a view to qualitative improvement of city environment, focusing on creating public space for the sake of spatial revitalization and restoration of publicity of urban space. Most of all, urban squares representing public space play significant roles not only for socio-cultural expressions and communications including relaxation, gatherings, events and assemblies but also for creation of artistic values of cities, although such squares at home differ from those in Europe, where cities were formed around squares, in terms of the times and ways of establishment. Particularly, city hall squares are part of public architecture representing cities as the urban space assuming symbolic meanings directly related to identities, place identity and images of cities. Most of domestic metropolitan cities, as well as Seoul that built the Seoul Square in 2004, have exerted themselves to establish new squares together with new city halls. Nonetheless, studies on city hall squares have mostly been limited to the Seoul Square. Accordingly, the present study is focused on domestic metropolitan city hall squares and comparatively analyses their location characteristics, shapes, spatial attributes, functions and status of utilization, so as to find out current status of domestic city hall squares and diagnose their functions and roles as city hall squares.

최근 많은 도시들이 도시환경의 질적인 향상을 위해 다양한 도시재생사업을 추진하면서, 도시공간의 활성화와 공공성 회복을 위한 도시 공공공간 창조에 많은 역점을 두고 있다. 그 중에서도 대표적인 공공공간이라 할 수 있는 도시광장은, 비록 우리나라의 광장이 광장을 중심으로 도시가 형성된 유럽광장과는 조성시기와 조성방식에서 차이점을 가지고 있지만, 도시민을 위한 휴식과 회합, 행사와 집회 등 사회적, 문화적 표현과 소통을 위한 기능뿐만 아니라 도시의 예술적 가치 창출에도 중요한 역할을 할 수 있다. 특히 시청광장은 그 도시를 대표하는 공공건축물의 광장으로 도시의 정체성과 장소성 그리고 도시 이미지와 직접적으로 관계하는 상징적 의미의 도시공간이라 할 수 있다. 2004년 조성된 서울시청의 서울광장을 비롯하여 우리나라 광역시의 대부분의 시청들이 신청사 건립과 함께 새로운 광장 조성에 많은 노력을 기울여 왔지만, 시청광장에 대한 연구의 대부분이 서울광장에만 국한되어 있는 실정이다. 따라서 본 연구는 우리나라 광역시 시청광장을 중심으로, 광장의 입지적 특성, 형태와 공간성격, 기능과 이용현황 등을 비교분석함으로써 우리나라 시청광장의 현황을 파악하고 시청광장으로서의 기능과 역할을 진단하고자 한다.
