The streetscape, as one of the most important elements of the visual quality of urban area has been confronted with the situation that the locality and the identity of an area were neglected with unplanned development. Jeonju-city needs urgently to improve the urban streetscape corresponding to the identity of the long history of city. The study aims at suggesting basic research materials to improve the quality of streetscape, viewing with historic identity of city, by evaluating the situation and analyzing the visual problems of streetscape, from the standpoint of physical and psychological view, around Jeonju City-Hall Plaza, as one of the specifically meaningful area. As results of the study, various physical and psychological survey of the streetscape of the area have been evaluated and some alternatives have been suggested to improve the quality of streetscape. And also it could be pointed out that the area has very high potential to represent the locality and the identity of the city.

본 연구는 도시의 역사적 정체성을 잃어가고 있는 전주시의 가로경관의 현황과 문제점을 파악하고 평가함으로써 전주시의 역사성과 정체성을 갖는 가로경관을 조성하기 위한 개선안을 마련하는 기초자료로 활용코자 한다. 가로변 건축물들은 가로경관의 중심적 요소이며 가로공간을 한정짓는 가로의 입면으로서 가로의 성격을 규정한다. 즉, 가로변 건물의 건축적 특성에 따라 가로경관의 구체적인 성격과 질이 결정되므로 가로변 건축물은 가로공간의 구성요소로서 가로경관 평가에 필수적이다. 본 연구에서는 전주시의 성격을 가장 잘 표현하고 대변 할 수 있는 가로로서 전주시 청사를 중심으로 한 주변 가로를 선정하여 건축물을 주 대상으로 경관영향 평가를 실시하였다. 선정된 가로 경관에 대한 사전조사를 바탕으로 한 물리적․심리적 측면에서의 종합적인 경관평가를 시도하였다. 이를 위해 기존 연구 자료를 토대로 물리적 측면에서는 가로 건축물의 용도, 형태, 규모, 재료, 색채 등에 대한 조사 분석이 이루어졌고, 심리적 지표로서 ①단순한-복잡한, ②개방된-위요된, ③명랑한-우울한, ④동적인-정적인, ⑤평온한-부산한, ⑥현대적인-전통적인의 6가지 평가 지표가 평가를 위해 사용되었다.
