The goal of this research is to search how the male students’ willingness to study ECE can affect their adaptation to the environment and career in the field. Also, the goal of this research is to find the turning point when, why and how the male students started to adapt. Seven new male students in a 4-year ECE education program were selected for this research. They met in focus group discussion, 1:1 and 1:2 counseling, and they were under personal observation for the research. As a result, male students who wanted to enter ECE had an easier time adapting to the atmosphere and had a more successful career path. On the other hand, those who didn’t want to enter ECE had help from other male students and a common goal to adapt to the environment.

본 연구의 목적은 유아교육을 전공하는 남자 신입생들의 학과입학의지에 따라 학과적응과 진로탐색이 어떻게 달라지는 지 살펴보고, 입학을 희망하지 않던 남학생들이 학과에 적응하게 된 계기를 모색하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 4년제 유아교육과 남자 신입생 7명을 연구대상으로 선정하였다. 자료수집방법으로 포커스 그룹면담이 주로 사용하였고, 이를 보완하기 위해 개별심층면담, 2인 집단면담, 개인저널, 참여관찰을 병행하여 내용을 분석하였다. 연구결과, 유아교육과 1학년 남학생들은 학과입학희망에 따라 학과적응과 진로탐색의 정도가 달라지는 것으로 나타났다. 한편, 입학을 희망하지 않던 남학생들이 학과에 적응하는데 공통의 관심사와 쉼터, 남학생들의 도움이 있었다.
