Relationship between University Examination Stress and Suicidal Thoughts of Academic High School Students - Focusing on the mediating effects of depression

The purpose of this study is to examine how university examination stress felt by academic high school students influence on suicidal thoughts and to find out the mediate effect of depression is made on university examination stress and suicidal thoughts. The subject of this study is 205 students(1st and 2nd graders) in two high schools in Seoul and the survey was conducted with them to measure university examination stress scale, depression scale and suicidal thoughts scale through the questionnaire. For this study, such collected data was analyzed through t-test, Parametric Correlation Analysis, and Structural Equation Modeling. The results are as follows: First, for the difference in university examination stress in terms of sociodemographic characteristics, students felt less university examination stress when they were in good health, educated less private education and higher school satisfaction. For the difference in suicidal thoughts, they had less frequent suicidal thoughts when they were in lower graders and had higher school scores. For the difference in depression, students had less depression when they were in lower graders, had more number of trusted friends, and felt more satisfied with their school life. There was no significant difference found in terms of other factors. Second, it was found that all variables between university examination stress, depression and suicidal thoughts of academic high school students had significant correlated relation. Third, it was shown that depression played the complete mediate role in the effect of university examination stress of academic high school students on their suicidal thoughts. Fourth, it was found there is no difference in mediate effect between university examination stress and suicidal thoughts of academic high school students according to the depression levels(high, middle and bottom).
