The Effect of Child's Perceived Mother's Negative Emotional Expressiveness and Psychological Control on Children's Depression - Focused on the Mediating Effect of Child's Emotional Regulation Ability

This study is to investigate the mediated effect of child’s emotional regulation with respect to effect of child's perceived mother's negative emotional expressiveness and psychological control on the child’s depression level. The subjects were a total of 491 students attending 5th and 6th grade students of elementary schools located In Incheon metropolitan city and Kyonggi province. The results of this study are as follows: All correlation between variables is a significant relationship, respectively. First, there was positive correlation between mothers' negative emotional expressiveness, and their children's depression. Also there was positive correlation between mothers' psychological control and their children's depression but negative correlation between mothers' negative emotional expressiveness and their children's emotional regulation. The results of SEM test showed mediating effects of emotional regulation ability on the relation between perceived mother's negative emotional expressiveness and psychological control on the child’s depression level. The implication for future studies and counseling practice were discussed based on the results of the present study. Finally, the study's limits and further discussion were suggested.
