This study analyzes the present situation of social welfare and come up with a role of church to activate social welfare in rural community. This research analyzes and examines 138 people who participate in social welfare programs which are practiced by the church that has a place in 6 streets of Jeollabuk-do Gunsan-si Seosu-myeon.
Summarizing the result acquired from the study is like this. Satisfaction of each welfare fields were represented in order of welfare for elderly people, children, youth, women and disabled. Also, it was facilities of welfare for elderly people and general facilities that needed the most for facilities and it was classes for elderly and free meals in order of need that needed the most for social welfare programs.
It can be said that because of aging rural community, the result presents satisfaction and desire of welfare for elderly people and reflects the importance of welfare for elderly. On the basis of the study, a role of church for activate social welfare in rural community should be restoring traditions like farmers' cooperative group and exchanging labor which were bases of maintaining traditional rural community. Also, it is urgently needed to paradigmatic approach between churches in rural community.

본 연구는 교회에서 실천하고 있는 농촌지역 사회복지현황을 분석하고, 농촌지역 사회복지 활성화를 위한 교회의 역할을 제시하는 것이다. 본 연구조사는 전라북도 군산시 서수면의 6개리에 위치한 교회에서 실시하고 있는 사회복지 프로그램에 참여하는 138명의 대상으로 조사 분석하였다. 본 연구에서 얻어진 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다.
전라북도 서수면 지역 농촌교회에서 실시하고 분야별 복지만족도는 노인복지, 아동복지, 청소년복지, 여성복지, 장애인복지 순으로 나타났다. 그리고 가장 필요한 복지기관으로는 종합복지관과 노인복지시설로 조사되었으며, 필요한 사회복지프로그램으로는 노인교실과 무료급식 순으로 나타났다. 농촌지역의 고령화로 인하여 노인복지에 대한 만족과 욕구가 동시에 나타나고 있으며 노인복지의 중요성을 반영한다고 할 수 있다. 또한 교회의 사회복지사업에 대한 참여와 복지기관설립은 교회의 이미지개선에서 긍정적인 역할을 하는 것으로 나타났다.
본 연구조사의 결과를 토대로 농촌지역 사회복지 활성화를 위한 교회의 역할은 과거 농촌 지역사회유지의 기반이 되었던 두레, 품앗이 등의 전통이 복원되어야 하는데, 그 중심적 역할을 지역의 교회가 담당해야 할 것이다. 또한 농촌 지역사회가 필요로 하는 사회복지실천을 위하여 농촌지역교회간의 연합적 접근이 절실하게 요청된다고 할 수 있다.
