Samuel Taylor Coleridge is the founder of the Romantic Movement in England, and W. B. Yeats is a contemporary Irish poet whose works evidently reflect the spirit of Romanticism. Coleridge’s influence on Yeats is not to be overlooked. Both Yeats’s play The Shadowy Waters and Coleridge’s poem “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” treat some supernatural experiences sailors encounter. In both, there are similarities in symbolic meanings, background, and mood. Particularly, this paper investigates how both poets make use of symbols such as the sea, birds, Life-in-Death, the sun and the moon: thus, Coleridge’s poem seems to be an inspiration to Yeats.
