This essay argues that Yeats and Joyce create their works and artistic principles from their disagreements with each other. Their differences are strategically recast and replayed by both writers to create a sense of literary identity and invent a tradition which was neither deadening nor politically restraining. But despite their efforts to highlight the differences in their aesthetics and views of the artist, they recurrently reference each and incorporate the vision they supposedly reject.
