As one of communicating tools, a letter is used by people to enquire wellbeing, pass news, and communicate business. The ancient letters passed on are the most meaningful historical documents. Since the creation of Hunmin jeong-eum in 15th century, especially, in the middle of 16th century, numerous Korean letters passed on have been found, which reflect the actual reality including rich daily expressions. The letters followed the natural Korean rules to choose the word order and vocabulary. Based on the characteristics of their own, Korean letters have become important documents for the Korean study and historical study. This paper aims to explore the use of Chinese words through the study of all Chinese words in Empress Sunwon’s Korean Letters. Empress Sunwon’s Korean Letters were written by Empress Sunwon reigning behind a curtain to her brother and nephew, which includes not only inquiries about wellbeing and living of daily life, but also includes information about royal family and court. Therefore, there are a large number of Chinese words with various forms and different meanings. These words exhibit accurately the use of Chinese words in Korean letters of 19th century, especially used by members of royal family and court. This paper studies the use of Chinese words in Empress Sunwon’s Korean Letters and compares the Chinese words in manuscript classics novels in the same period in order to explore the characteristics and use of Chinese words in Korean letters of 19th century.

편지는 오랜 시기를 거쳐 사람들 사이에 안부, 소식, 용무 등을 적어 상호 교류를 하는 도 구로 사용되어 왔고 중요한 역사 자료로 남아 있다. 15세기 󰡔훈민정음󰡕의 창제로 16세기 중반 이래, 많은 한글 편지가 현전하고 있다. 한글 편지는 당시의 실생활이 그대로 녹아 있고 일상 어휘를 풍부하게 담고 있으며 어순이나 어휘 선택에 있어서도 자연스러운 한국어의 질서에 따랐다. 이러한 자료적 특성으로 한글편지는 근래에 국어학 분야와 역사학 분야 등에서 중요 한 자료로 많이 이용되고 있다. 본 연구는 궁중 서신 <순원왕후 한글편지>에 나타나는 한자어를 전반적으로 검토해 보고 한자어의 구체적인 양상을 살펴보는 데 목적이 있다. <순원왕후 한글편지>는 수렴청정을 해 온 순원왕후가 친정의 형제와 조카에게 쓴 편지로 안부나 소식을 묻고 전하는 등 일상생활 관련 내용은 물론, 왕실과 조정 관련 내용들을 많이 담고 있고 분량도 적지 않다. 그러므로 <순원왕후 한글편지>에는 다양한 형태와 의미의 한자어들이 많이 나타난다. 이러한 한자어 들은 19세기 한글편지에서의 한자어 사용 양상, 특히 왕실 및 사대부 계층에서 사용된 한자어 양상을 잘 보여준다. 필자는 <순원왕후 한글편지>에 나타나는 한자어의 구체적인 양상을 살 피는 과정에 기타 한문 문헌, 그리고 비슷한 시기의 필사본 고전소설에 나타나는 한자어와의 비교를 통해 19세기 한글 편지에 나타나는 한자어의 특징과 사용 양상을 살펴보았다. 그리고 영인 자료에 대한 재검토를 통해 기존 판독문에 나타난 판독 오류와 잘못 제시된 한자를 정정 하였다.
