Luyu's Chajing is the first book which was written on tea culture in China. The contents of this book have a wide range of subjects related to tea culture, such as its beneficial effects, manufacturing process, utensils used in tea preparation, method of preparation, method of drinking, and tea history. We are surprised at the minute details of its description. Luyu valued the spiritual energy of tea more than anything else and so emphasized the importance of precision in manufacturing process. Moreover, he called on tea-drinking people to conduct precisely and frugally. In this sense, Chajing is called a highly spiritual book. In this paper, I would like to pay attention to the comparison of tea with ginseng, and the comparison of Yuezhou celadon porcelain with Xingzhou white porcelain, in Luyu's Chajing. From these comparisons, I will indicate Luyu's awakening to the Chinese southern culture against to the northern one. He praised highly tea tree naming as southern auspicious tree. He had a fancy for celadon porcelain made in southern Yuezhou, especially for tea culture. We can read Luyu's strong adherence and confidence on southern China. I will suggest that Luyu believed that southern China is culturally superior to northern China. This point has hardly been discussed so far. The purpose of this paper is to investigate this cultural meaning of Chajing.

唐代에 기술된 陸羽(733-804)의 『茶經』은 중국 최초의 茶書라고 일컫는다. 여기에 기록된 내용은 차의 효능, 제조, 도구, 달이는 방법, 마시는 방법, 역사 그리고 그 밖의 사항에 관한 것들이다. 우리는 그러한 사항들이 매우 상세하게 언급되고 있음에 특별히 주목하게 된다. 육우는 무엇보다도 차의 精氣를 소중하게 생각했으므로, 그 제조 역시 엄정하고도 가장 좋은 방식으로 행해질 것을 요구하였다. 또 차를 마시는 사람에 대해서도 ‘精行과 儉德’이라고 하는 인격의 실질을 추구하는 점 등으로 볼 때, 『다경』은 매우 정신성이 높은 책이라 할 수 있다. 그런데 『다경』에서는 茶와 人蔘, 越州窯와 邢州窯 자기를 비교하고 있다. 그런데 이 대목에서 육우의 문장을 잘 읽어보면, 우리는 여기에서 육우 자신이 南方이라고 하는 지역성에 대한 애착과 자부심이 매우 강했다는 사실을 느끼게 된다. 나아가 이것이 육우의 의식 가운데에서 자신이 성장하고 활동했던 터전이었던 남방 지역이 북방에 대해 우위성을 갖는다고 생각할 정도로 승화되고 있음을 알게 된다. 본고에서는 『다경』이 갖는 이러한 문화적 의미를 고찰해보고자 한다.
