This research aims to analyze the theological meanings expressed in Song of Songs in terms of Christian spirituality. Even though the text itself describes the love of Eros between men and women, it has inspired many spiritual thinkers throughout the history of Christianity. We can draw three meanings from the text to apply to Christian spirituality. First, it describes the desire for love. The female protagonist in the text says that the desire for love is strong like death. Also, the desire for love is like the fire which even a flood cannot extinguish. The reason the love of Eros is so strong is that it is sweeter than any other human experience on earth. This point could apply to the relationship between God and the believer. The foundation of spiritual life is to long for the love of God and to love God. In addition, the spiritual life is to experience that the love relationship with God is far sweeter than the Eros love. Second, the text tells us about the lovesick. After the third meeting with her lover, the protagonist suddenly suffers from love sickness. She wanders on the streets in Jerusalem and asks her friends to help her find her lover. It is the suffering from the absence of a lover. We can find a similar theme in the theology of Christian spirituality. St. John of the Cross in the 16th century developed the idea of “Dark Night of the Soul.” The dark night of the soul means the absence of God. In other words, the believer experiences that God does not respond to his prayer anymore through which he has experienced the presence of God. Usually, it does not happen to the spiritual beginner. When the believer is on progress spiritually, God could allow the period of the dark night of the soul. The believer would experience some purifications and illuminations during that period. Those experiences benefit the believer for the union with God, which is the final goal of spiritual advance. The third insight from the Song of Songs is the union of husband and wife in marriage. The husband and wife enjoy the intimate relationship by which they know each other’s wants. Furthermore, they willingly commit themselves to each other’s wants. It gives a light to understand the meaning of the union with God. For the believer, it means that he clearly understands what God wants. In addition, he fully dedicates his life with joy to accomplish God’s will.

지혜문학에 속하는 아가서에 대한 해석은 다양한 견해들이 존재하지만 일반적으로 이스라엘 민족이 남긴 남녀간의 사랑에 대한 서정시로 이해되어 왔다. 동시에 아가서는 신자와 하나님 사이의 친밀한 사랑의 교제를 추구해온 기독교 영성가들에게도 많은 영감을 주어왔다. 본 논문은 아가서에 표현된 사랑의 개념들이 영성신학에 제공하는 통찰들을 세가지로 분석하였다. 첫째, 사랑에 대한 갈망이다. 아가서의 여 주인공은 사랑은 죽음만큼 강하며 홍수도 끌 수 없는 불과 같다고 고백한다. 주석가들은 8장에 표현된 이 구절을 아가서의 주제라고 결론짓는다. 이 사랑에 대한 갈망은 신자와 하나님 사이에서도 핵심 주제이다. 영성은 피조되지 않은 신적 사랑을 갈망하는 것이며 그 사랑을 경험하는 것이기 때문이다. 둘째, 상사병의 고통이다. 아가서에서 여 주인공은 사랑하는 남자와의 세 번째 만남후에 상사병의 고통을 경험한다. 상사병은 사랑하는 사람에게 사랑의 감정이 형성되고 어느 정도의 교제 기간이 지난 후에 일어나는데 사랑하는 자가 부재시에 그 사랑을 확신할 수 없으면 발병한다. 이 상사병의 고통은 영적 정진의 길을 가는 신자에게는 “영혼의 어두운 밤”으로 경험된다. 16세기에 십자가의 성 요한에 의하여 정립된 영혼의 어두운 밤이란 하나님의 임재의 부재 시기를 의미한다. 상사병처럼 이 영혼의 어두운 밤도 영적 진보의 초보자에게는 나타나지 않는다. 어느 정도 능동적인 신앙생활을 통해 하나님과의 만남이 깊어지고 영적인 진보를 경험하는 신자에게 나타난다. 즉, 이제까지 기도나 말씀 묵상 같이 능동적인 영적 삶을 통해 경험되던 하나님의 임재를 더 이상 경험할 수 없게 되는 것이다. 하나님은 더 이상 그러한 노력에 반응하지 않음을 통해 신자가 정화와 조명을 경험하도록 한다. 나아가 하나님의 은혜 없이는 인간은 절대적으로 무기력한 존재라는 인간의 실존을 경험하게 된다. 이 영혼의 밤은 아가서의 여인이 다시 사랑하는 남자를 만날때까지 자신을 성찰하는 것과 같다. 그러한 성찰이 남녀간의 사랑을 더 깊고 의미 있게 만드는 것처럼 영혼의 밤을 통해 신자는 영적 진보의 최종적인 목적지인 하나님과의 연합을 위해 유익을 얻는다. 셋째, 아가서는 남녀간의 연합의 의미를 통해 하나님과의 연합에 대한 좋은 통찰을 제공한다. 아가서의 남녀는 결혼을 통해 완전한 연합에 이르게 된다. 부부는 이 세상에서 서로를 가장 잘 아는 사이이며 사랑하기에 서로가 원하는 것을 위해 기꺼이 헌신하는 사이이다. 이것이 하나님과의 연합의 의미를 분명하게 이해하도록 돕는다. 영성가들에 따라 다소 주관적으로 경험되고 이해되기도 했던 하나님과의 연합이란 하나님의 뜻에 대한 일치이며 그 뜻에 대한 순종이라고 할 수 있다. 신자가 하나님과 친밀한 사랑의 교제를 경험하다 보면 하나님의 뜻을 확신할 수 있다. 나아가 사랑하기에 어떤 어려운 계명도 기쁨으로 순종할 수 있다. 그 순종의 정점은 자신을 부인하고 십자가의 길을 가는 것인데 하나님을 사랑하기에 즐거움으로 그 길을 갈 수 있다.
