초록

영어

Cordel Literature, known as “literature on a string” is communal and cultural heritage that has been passed down in northeast of Brazil over a century since it introduced in the late 19th century by Portuguese. The word that also called, ‘folheto(booklet)’ comes from historical background that in the old days sellers hung booklet on a string in the squares and markets or poets performance(narrate stories) in front of crowd. Cordel, originated from European ballad and chapbook, is recognized as a folk literature that represents Brazilian oral literature today. Cordel is more than just a literature in northeast of Brazil where book distribution rate is low, while illiteracy rate is high compared to other regions. To the local resident who has little opportunity to encounter radio or newspapers, Cordel was not only the window that spread knowledge, but also communication tool that performed collective intelligence by sharing existing information and create new knowledge. Some of this part still lasts and play a role. Along with that, Booklet like oral text also exists, however, Cordel Literature puts interrelation between storyteller and audience first as performance (how audience reacts to the story) is the center of it. Oral literature is defined as the story that passed down from mouth to mouth. This means it is temporary but simultaneously and based on extemporary creativity. Thus, it is possible to say that Cordel Literature continued by performance, in this sense, has most fundamental literary form of oral literature. Cordel Literature has also great implications to contemporaries who are familiar to digital narratives. Cordel is such a wide range high-value creative work that has complex stories not only tradition, custom, the great historical figures, but also political, social situations and many changes in living conditions. It includes various genres of art by telling a story in many different types such as storytelling, song, poem, woodprint, cartoon, play, film, literature in cyber space. In short, Cordel shows new possibility that oral literature can get close to public in this age of mass-media. With this aspect, in this article, I will analyze how Cordel passed down and see Cordel’s contemporary meaning and study the origin of its genre that transformed from traditional form of poem to digital literature.
