This paper aims to investigate into the affixation of Chinese characters in the early modern East Asia. dealing with its development process by focusing on ‘-jeok/de/-teki’.
The modern Korea, China and Japan, while accepting Western civilization, have made a great number of new Sino-Neologisms. In this process affixation of Chinese characters is generated, with a lot of Chinese-based affixes appearing. Affixation of Chinese characters happens mostly in nouns, but only ‘-jeok/de/-teki’ belongs to the affixation of auxiliary. Compared with other affixes it has experienced a different development process. This paper analyzes the affixation process of ‘-jeok/de/-teki’ revealing its origin.
With 『해국도지(Hai-Guo-Tu-Zhi)』, 『서양사정(Things Western)』 and 『서유견문(Overview of Westward Travel)』 as the main references, this paper investigates affixation of Chinese characters by comparing Chinese characters of 『영화자전(An English and Chinese dictionary)』 and 『철학자회(Philosophical vocabulary)』.
