In this article, agricultural utensils of Goryeo and Joseon dynasty were analyzed based on the agricultural representation found from agricultural literature and genre paintings combined with data gathered from excavation sites.
e agricultural utensils are composed as plowing utensils(起耕具) such as iron plowspares, iron shovel ends (plows and spades) and iron hoe, seeding utensils(摩田具)such as rakes and pitchfolk, watering utensils for the rice eld(水田具) such as Salpo, weeding utensils (除草具) such as iron weeding spades, harvesting utensils(收穫具) such as sickles, and threshing utensils (打作具)such as ails, log threshing-stands.
Consequently, it is assumed that in the Goryeo and Joseon periods, the cultivation process was systematically organized as plowing harrowing watering weeding harvesting threshing. The utensils reflecting Korean climate are iron plow spares, Salpo and hoes and especially hoe, conveys the typical characteristics of Korean climate and topography which weeding process was the most signicant part Also iron plow spares- spades, iron plow spares-pitchfolk, spades-pitchfolk which are plowing and seeding utensils. Iron agricultural utensils found in excavation sites often include plowing and seeding utensils. The sites where iron agricultural utensils have been usually excavated are tomb vestiges and residence vestiges.

발굴현장에서 얻어진 고고학 자료를 중심으로 農書와 회화에 보이는 농경을 분석하여 고려·조선시대의 농구를 고찰하였다. 그 결과, 농구는 쟁기(보습과 볏)· ‘U’자형쇠날(따비·화가래·가래)·괭이 등의 갈이 농구[起耕具], 써레·쇠스랑과 같은 삶는 농구[摩田具], 살포와 같은 물 대는 농구[水田具], 호미와 같은 김매는 농구[除草具], 낫과 같은 거두는 농구[收穫具], 그리고 도리깨·개상과 같은 터는 농구[打作具]로 구성되어 있었다. 이로 보아 고려·조선에서는 갈이[起耕]-삶기[摩田]-물대기[給水]-김매기[除草]-거두기[收穫]-털이[打作] 작업이 체계적으로 이루어졌음을 알 수 있다. 우리나라의 기후와 관련하여 가장 발달한 농구는 쟁기, 살포, 호미이며, 특히 호미는 김매는 작업이 가장 긴요한 우리나라의 기후와 지형에 맞는 농구이다. 정밀한 작업을 요하는 농구가 발달하였던 것이다.
이러한 농구 중에서 쟁기-가래, 쟁기-쇠스랑, 화가래-쇠스랑 등과 같이 갈이·삶는 농구를 이용한 농작업이 가장 일반적인 농사체계였다. 고고학 발굴조사 현장에서도 갈이 농구와 삶는 농구의 출토 빈도가 높게 나타나고 있다. 철제 농구가 출토된 유적은 무덤유적과 생활유적으로 나눌 수 있으며, 農耕儀禮로서 사용된 예도 있다.
